Re: 335/archtop style question

My first thought is no. Even if you were willing to sacrifice its appearance A little. The main body wouldn’t be so bad but you would lose the concave to convex change at the edges, the wing tips are very curved and a laminate would really struggle here over a former. Then you have the loss of any s...

Re: Saddle Shape

I was taught that the string should roll over the back of the bone and launch off the front at a definite point. Once I have the position of the ledge I file the back off with a file in one motion ending with the file pointing directly to the pin hole. At the front of the ledge I tend to straight ed...

Re: Guitar Inlay cutting Jig

What are the maximum dimensions you can cut to? I guess this is governed by the closest/furthest the pub will move from the pivot.

Am I also right in thinking that you could do a complete bridge as long as the template was laid perpendicular to the pin-pivot line?

Re: Airbrushing lacquer vs HVLP

Update: I had a go with waterborne lacquer and a Fuji HVLP sprayer and worked out that its a lot easier than I remembered. However I went at it with a very low bar for success, I wasn't going to get upset about drips, I had a foam brush to hand, orange peel or even overspray and definitely would NOT...

My Bocote never did change colour, beautiful tigress pattern.
Shrinks and cracks like a bigger though. Be very mindful of humidity changes.

Glad to hear you’ve reached the pinnacle Steve.

I’m not remotely jealous of your spray booth, my black polythene rubbish bag setup is actually a lot better than it looks, thank you very much!🤣😝😀

Re: Airbrushing lacquer vs HVLP

Thanks Steve After spraying five guitars I came to the same conclusion that my main issue was Skill. Without it you can’t get that final gloss coat on the work, so you are back to sanding back and buffing up, hence you may as well slap the lacquer on with a brush!!!! I’ve just made some lovely Dougl...

Airbrushing lacquer vs HVLP

Has anyone on the forum tried to apply lacquer with an Modellers airbrush instead of a HVLP system? I’ve tried spraying with a HVLP gun and I’m simply rubbish, orange peel and overspray central! An airbrush would give so much more control but an I right in thinking that no matter how many times I sp...

Measure them and calculate the densities, that will help an awful lot when researching on a wood database.

Show off! 😀🤣😝

It’s another simple but great idea. I may just make another one that’s a little shorter and just does measurements in the range I need for string clearances.

Re: It’s not your fault but

$230 sounds a bit steep. Mine was £34, which, because of BrexiDIOTS, is probably close to $34 now

Glad to see there are cheaper alternatives Trevor.

It’s not your fault but

Why has no one ever mentioned this tool before? Just bought a thicknessing wedge, about $60, link below, to replace my stew Mac feeler gauges. For decades I have been lifting feelers up in different combinations to ascertain string clearances over frets to complete setups but no more. Now I simply w...

FFT by studio six digital seems to produce curves that as detailed as those you have included in your books Trevor. Very simple to use store and compare graphs. It’s data is all sourced via a microphone which may be a limiting factor for your work. The peaks in response curves marry up very well to ...

Yairi Gakki is Sadao Yairi. The other Yairi was Kazuo Yairi. Hiroshi Yairi was Sadai Yari's son and the guitars he made usually bore an S Yairi label. She sells sea shells on the sea shore. Re: Bridge plate

I think you’ll be ok to carry on. The bridge plate is adding to the stiffness at the centre, the bridge pin holes are tracking their way through the plate, so that’s all good. The only small risk is that if it were to belly up then the curve of the belly could get close to under the bridge. Small ri...

Re: Moving Equipment

IF you are moving 26,500km I'd suggest you go around the world the other way, it'll only be 13,500km, half the price! I'd also suggest using the drum sander as a bobbin sander with some big bits of softwood. Put them in place under the drum, hold them steady and then bring the drum down on them. Tur...

Re: Brisbane humidity

13 m squared for a workshop is ample, same as my place. It leads you wanting more for sure but only for things like spray rooms wood sheds. The RH in UK is around 80% in the winter in my garden workshop. A cheap dehumidifier works well to get the RH down to around 55% which matches the house perfect...

One other idea for getting the saddle in the right place is to build an intonator like this one from Stewmac. A bit of Brass block and some M3 SCREW DOOR HANDLE Brass Chrome Connecting Sleeve Screws / Bolt Roses Knobs Cost nothing. Bit of work with a drill hacksaw and pliers soon had it done. https:...

I’m nearly two metres tall, so a dreadnought looks a bit like a ukulele in my hands! You gotta look good! I've found the following to be a handy reference, and build to these resonances...it seems to work! I like my T1(2) to be higher, I don't really get excited, as a player, with those boomy dreadnought sounding steel string guitars. They seem to lack clarity between each note with low attack and lack...
