Re: liquid hide glue for frets.

After a bit of reading I decided to go with Titebond original which I have used before. I ended up buying a bottle of Liquid hide and used it to glue the new bone nut into the job. Hopefully the bond will break easily for the next bloke who has to remove it.

liquid hide glue for frets.

currently refretting an old Gibson explorer and tossing up whether to use LHG instead of CA gel I usually use. Reason is the CA is tricky if you get it on the Gibson finish. It is easily dissolved by acetone :( I have used Titebond original in the past for this reasonj.

Any one used LHG?

Re: Binding Glue

personally I like CA gel. Used Weldon a few times and didn't bond with it  even bought a couple of large tubes which I bought at a plastics place out Braeside way. It still sits unopened in a drawer in the workshop/ The CA can be a little challenging at first and after you glue your fingers to ...

Re: glueing caul question

I've used staples shot in from a hand powered staple gun and nipped off with pinchers leaving tiny little teeth to hold things from sliding. Whenever I've done it though I've wondered about them rusting and staining the veneer after a few years. It's been my practice to use titebond. Using epoxy as ...

glueing caul question

I need to glue 4 layers of veneer to the back of a head stock. The caul has been created and matches the curve at the head stock to neck transition pretty well. There will eventually be a carved volute similar to this one I did late last year so there is a curve that the veneer needs to fit. http://...

yep this is a cheap laptop or notebook as they are more rightly called. It's running an ancient processor on an end of life mainboard bundled in a substandard case. The OS it is running requires approximately 6 - 8 times the processing power and memory available . This machine is an excuse to sell a...

Re: making an electric guitar shim

I use a piece of brass bar .015" - .025" thick by about !/2" wide across the back of the pocket to get the neck angle right if necessary. Ive seen bits of cigarette packet, sandpaper, credit card etc etc. Never really noticed a difference in tone or sustain. It is my belief that good compression in ...

Re: The zero fret

Ray, a compensated saddle is fine for most of the fretboard but the lower frets will still not be correctly intonated with just a compensated saddle. Having setup many 100's of nuts and bridges on electric guitars I find chords in farmers corner very sweet when I'm done. Certainly you can go over t...

Re: cleaning instruments.

best i found is shellite [naptha] which is cheap and available anywhere. it will clean off pretty much any crap and and i see a lot of very cruddy old electrics through here. It does not damage old or new finishes or plating. it evaporates quickly and sometimes will leave a residue which is a whiff ...

If you are employing some other form of intelligence to do the work, isn't that the same as buying it from a supplier. anyone who's had anything to with computers would know that there is no "other form of intelligence" involved in computer driven machinery. in fact a computer has no more intellige...

Re: What is "Hand Made"

My definition would be built entirely by one person. As soon as tasks are let out to others you have lost touch with an instrument. As far as using power tools would a potter for arguments sake using an electric wheel still be making hand made pots? To be fair you would have to say yes. A luthier us...

the advice on stabilising the edges with CA is good. if you get lacquer on the fingerboard it usually will scrape off with a razor I usually leave some lacquer pooled on a waxy bit of paper and once it goes off you have a thickish chunk of it. It can be lifted off and sliced into small pieces that c...
