Re: What price a good blade?

I've bought a few Veritas tools over the last few years and am well pleased with them. I've got that block plane too and use it a lot. Never tried planing ali though, except with my Makita (blades easily replaced).

Re: Binding tape ruining my top

I'm on my first proper acoustic at the moment (the others were resos) and I just used shellac around my soundhole rosette today. Never thought of using it around the bindings, but will do. I use a heat gun to gently warm the tape and pull it off at 45 deg as Woodrat suggests. Would it be possible, o...

You'd be pushed to find decent jarrah at Bunnings, even in Perth, nowadays. They used to mill most of it years ago!

Re: Western Red Cedar for bracings?

Hahaha, Tod you really are a laugh! I did get some Am cherry out of the skip a few years ago which I've used for a neck. I was doing some shop-fitting at the time and we were re-fitting a Maccas. Got enough for a few more necks. I'm mostly involved in home renos in the older Perth suburbs. Eyes now ...

Re: Ideas?: Executing the side stripe on this Martin & Coupa

This is all assuming that the sides have to be made from solid; would it not be simpler to make a male/female mould and build the ribs from (2 or 3) veneers, inlaying the stripe between the external veneers as you go? The 3 external pieces can be held in place with veneer tape. I've built a few reso...

Re: Western Red Cedar for bracings?

Thanks for your input. I am making two similar OM's but have only enough spruce on hand to brace one and I have heaps of WRC so I thought.....hey maybe???? I'll go for the spruce then, I know where I can get a bit in Perth. And perhaps I'll venture into the realms of carbon fibre/cedar composites at...

Western Red Cedar for bracings?

Hi, has anyone tried WCR for guitar bracings? What are your thoughts and experiences?
I have enough spruce for one guitar but now I'm considering building two together and I have plenty of WRC that I may use if it's OK. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Sheoak guitar soundboard?

Thankyou gentlemen for your swift and excellent advice. Kim, so it was you who nearly got my van with that stubbie!!! If you'd emptied it first you might have got the mill LOL. I worked at the Jarrahdale mill a few years ago doing restoration stuff (indirectly)for the Heritage Council and noticed th...

Sheoak guitar soundboard?

I'm about to build an OM style of flat-top acoustic guitar and got some good sheoak (about 5 or 6mm thick) from a mill just south of Perth which I intended to use for the back and sides. However, when I mentioned to the mill operator that I would use spruce for the top he asked why not use sheoak to...

Re: Stiff Grover Machine head

Ah, she's stuffed, mate. Best you just send that old D28 over to me! No, but seriously, as I understand it Grovers offer a 'Lifetime' warranty on their tuners. At least they do nowadays. Maybe you can contact them and find out? You might get a free replacement. They look like Rotomatics to me.
Cheers.

Re: The Celtic Beauty - The epic journey

Just come across your posting. I really love that guitar! And the build story. I think with your "Never-Give-Up" attitude you should be granted Honorary Australian citizenship! And since I'm originally Scottish I should have a "Celtic Beauty" too. Or would it be easier if I just married your friend?...

Re: Weld On 16 ..... alternatives?

Thought I'd provide an update on my plastic bindings adventure........ I got a tube of Pacific Balsa C23 glue ($4.25) from Stanbridges model shop in Perth the other day and it seems to be working OK. I glued most of the binding on the Les Paul from the top of the neck round to the horn then I heated...

Thankyou gentlemen, for the welcome and advice. I believe I've now included my signature. Jim, my parents actually christened me "Fantastic" after my father, Fantastic Mr Fox. However, as it's a hard name to live up to, especially in the "Nano-Shed" (my workshop is so small it's best described on th...

Weld On 16 ..... alternatives?

I had part of a tube of Weld On 16 in the fridge since my last LP build, about 4 months ago; went to glue the plastic fingerboard bindings on this arvo (new LP project) but the glue's turned to gel. Not easy to get this stuff in Perth. The last time I tried Mulford Plastics but they want a minimum o...
