Vibrational stiffness for a back

I am sure I am missing something. Why in table 4.5-2 is the back vibration stiffness value lower on a classical than a SS? I understand the top; given that classical guitars have less string energy a light top is very important, so thinning the top for mass but really stiffing the falcate braces to ...

Re: 12 String SS Falcate braced guitar.

Thanks all for the information. I pulled the article on the pinless design and construction. Two strings per pin looks very interesting and would work well in a falcate. I found the posts describing that design.

Richard thank you for your help and offer.

Re: 12 vs 14 fret neck join. What is your experience.

I built one of each both close to the same size, one was 14 fret to the body and one was 12 fret to the body. I liked the sound of my 12 fret better. but there were many other factors that could have affected the sound. The guy I made the 14 fret loves the clean sound he is getting and has used it f...

12 String SS Falcate braced guitar.

I have been asked to make a 12 string acoustic guitar and I thought that I would try to use falcate braces. Other than making sure the braces handle the load my main concern is using a 12 string pin less bridge; I do not want to try to place the large pin holes between the braces. I saw a picture of...

Thanks for posting this. Just today I just tracked down a buzz; loose post screw of a slotted steel string tuner. Buzzes can be a real pain to find because the sound does not always seem to be near the cause.

Re: Ervin Smoygi Books

I have both sets of books. While I enjoyed reading both, I use Gore\Gilet during nearly every project. The first volume in both sets covers design. The Gore\Gilet books contains a comprehensive and usable text on all of the design parameters for acoustic guitars. My take is the Ervin Smoygi is more ...

Re: Current Build - Falcate Braced Multiscale OM cutaway

"Back does not appear to be coupling with the top at present." Why do you say that? My guess is you will not need to do much to the back brace. When you lower the top with the bridge and strings I suspect the back will come down as well because it is coupled. If you want to hit 180 Hz you might wan...

Re: Chladni and VA tests ???

I might be wrong but looking at the body assembled no bridge It looks like your mic gain is too high on the VA tests. If the input signal clips you get also sorts of peaks.

Re: Current Build - Falcate Braced Multiscale OM cutaway

The tentative forward plan: 1. Targets are 95/180/226 for air, main top and back frequencies. 2. Allowance for effect on T(1,1)2 once the bridge goes on is one area of uncertainty. Assuming 0.6Hz/gram drop as per the book and assuming a max bridge weight of 25gram ....I need to allow for a drop as ...

Re: Interpreting Closed Box Tap Tests

I did a Martin style 00 12 fret to the body a couple of years back I have a few spectrum graphs one of them is not that far from yours. Might give you some ideas as you go forward Here is the spectrum of the guitar just after I closed it. You can see the top is around 242 Hz. The back is higher than...

Re: Current Build - Falcate Braced Multiscale OM cutaway

On my current build I also had to remove my first top. I ended up with a lower top resonance even though I increased the height of the braces relative to my first falcate classical guitar. I've been thinking about how to achieve more consistency for stiffness of the falcate braces. One way as mentio...

Re: ready to set up second falcate classical

Martin, you probably missed the line in one of my previous posts: "I pulled the first one after closing the box and realizing that the final top resonance would be below 180 Hz." Like you this is the second top on this guitar. I was actually referring to this process with my compliment :D Sorry, I ...

Re: Current Build - Falcate Braced Multiscale OM cutaway

I have been finding the spruce is pretty easy to bend. I do bend all of the laminates on a hot pipe before laminating them, even for the main falcate brace.

Re: strung up second falcate classical

I made the compensated nut and saddle and strung the guitar up. The sounded sounded great about a half an hour after I put the first set of strings on. I am really excited to hear how it sounds over the next week. My target for the top was 190 Hz, almost got it. I ended up at 94.2 Hz for the T (1,1)...

Re: ready to set up second falcate classical

Thanks, Yes there is a bit taken off the lower brace on the back. The teacher was rather Conservative. I think I nearly turned to SS after he played the falcate braced SS I made. I think what finally turn him was the 20 inch radius on the fret board of my classical. He is getting older with some art...

Re: Current Build - Falcate Braced Multiscale OM cutaway

Rough results from initial tap test: T(1,1)1 - 95Hz T(1,1)2 - 175Hz T(1,1)3 - 210Hz The back appears to be coupling with top..... Initial plan is to thin periphery of lower bout which should drop top resonances by up to 5Hz. The back - will consider stiffening up the main back brace to bring the fr...
