Re: Acacia dread build thread
Hi Allan, only just read this thread for 1st time. I have never tried a hardwood top and have never explored it. I was struck by the 3.5mm target top thickness given in your nov 7 post. Most spruce tops are around 3.0mm. Why would a presumably q/sawn hardwood top be more than that? Curious. Frank S...

Re: Acacia dread build thread
Nice big dreadie sound!! Until it’s set up I won’t be able to give it a fair evaluation as the strings are miles above the board at the moment, but from what I can tell id say it has a great sound, as expected it needs to be attacked a bit harder to get the top moving but that goes for any hardwood...

Re: Acacia dread build thread
First string up and a quick strum. I cut the nut to 0.5mm and pulled the relief back a bit so it was slightly playable.

Now to let it sit for a few days under tension, maybe a week before it gets a proper setup.

Polishing: This link shows the speed that I polish at. Any faster is too fast. The guy I learned to polish from goes even slower than this, but his paint jobs are also better than anyone else I know. The clear was cut first with 1000, then 2000, then 3000. I’m using 3M Perfect it polish on a 3M blue...

D8EBAEF0-A921-4649-A252-9254315A0BF9.jpeg This morning I shot three coats of Mirotone 2k clear onto this one. Now that I’m spraying clear and not just sealer, I’m more particular on my spraying as I have the build already in the sealer, now I’m looking for nice smooth glossy coats, not so much thic...

Re: Acacia dread build thread
Block sanding the sealer wit 320 grit followed by a buzz over using 600 grit on a random orbital to remove the scratches. Had a few killer hangs/runs in the sealer as I laid in on thick last time, good thing it stands out so easy! I’m not stressed about getting runs when a spray primer/sealer. If it...

Re: HVLP set up
I wouldn’t get too caught up on HVLP, LVLP etc etc, just buy a gun that feels good in your hands and then set it up to spray how you want/feel comfortable. A lot of old school painters hate newer guns as they can’t load the paint onto the surface like you can an old air hog of a gun. If you’re only ...

Re: HVLP set up
I’d suggest you go into a auto paint store and handle the guns and see what you like the feel of. I’ve always thought of myself as an Iwata guy, however the last time I bought a gun I did a heap of online research and decided I was going to buy a particular sata which was around $800ish. After going...

Re: Acacia dread build thread
The timber grain is looking great. How many more coats will be applied for the final finish? Wayne https://wjguitars.wixsite.com/mysite-1 It depends if it sands smooth this time or not, if not then it’ll get a few more coats of sealer, if it stands flat then it’ll move to clear coats where I usuall...

Re: Acacia dread build thread
This one has been put aside for quite a while, however with today being the perfect temperature for spraying I thought I’d take the chance to lay down some more sealer coats. It had three coats last time and then I’d sanding it back to the timber, not planned that way, it’s just that I got some rub ...

Re: Fret seating problem
[The modified hacksaw might work but I suggest you get your hands on a proper fret saw. Yes, I suspect the additional information may also supply a possible culprit to the problem. To answer the question, I use the same stewmac circular saw blade for all timber boards and all fretwire. It’s cut tho...

Re: Fret seating problem
More thoughts on gluing in frets. Are we actually gluing in the fret (ie a metal to wood bond) or just stiffening up the sides of the fret slot to improve the tang seat? If fret slotting and fret fitting is done carefully then do we actually need glue? If all you want to do is fill the fret slot, s...

Re: Fret seating problem
I take the view that the water from the Titebond swells the wood surrounding the slot and the glue prevents the wood returning to original state once water has dried off. I also run a bead of water into the slot prior to fretting. That sounds pretty scary to me. My personal opinion is I’d not want ...

Re: Fret seating problem
No, the reason being is that titebond will never properly adhere to the fret. It’ll only fill up the space between the tang and the fret. It kind of defeats the purpose of glue in the first place.

Re: Fret seating problem
After skim reading the posts and looking at the pic I’d guess it’s either slots not deep enough or they haven’t been cleaned properly, or the frets simply weren’t hammered in enough, OR... what i suspect is the most likely the issue, most probably the neck wasn’t supported enough during the hammerin...

I’m still sticking with my first comment!
However if you’ve got QLD Maple there to do a side by side comparison, you’ll probably be able to answer this yourself. Check the smell of it fresh cut side by side too

Not the best pics, so I’ll throw out a guess of Qld Maple, but due to the pics I wouldn’t even bet a dollar on that guess!

It’s actually the cheapest piece of crap gun that I’ve got!
A $100 workquip !!!
It’s my primer gun, but since ive broken all the cups for my other guns and not putting money back into the business I’ve just been using this for everything lately.

Spraying! In the time I’ve been on this forum I see a lot of newcomers as well as those with a few builds under their belt asking about spraying, so I’ll break down the process with some hints and tips to help you experiment and learn your own way. - I use Nitrile gloves. Latex gloves will just melt...

Re: Warning to be conscious!!!!
I’ve heard second hand stories of people burning their shed down with Fox style benders, they set them up, go do something else and forget it’s turned on. I always set an alarm on my mobile phone to go off after what I call the “bake period”, this way it’s never on for longer than the minimal times....

Re: Acacia dread build thread
This morning is a day off, so I spent a bit of time 320 sanding the entire guitar, running the 320 around all the shard edges to create a minor fillet and just paying attention to anything I may have missed. Problem areas I place a bit of tape to find them easily (less sanding work later involved th...

Re: Acacia dread build thread
I usually don’t pore fill acoustics as the Mirotone sealer does a good job of that, however I figured this Blackwood could use a helping hand, so a mixture of Zpoxy with a dash of acetone was wiped over it. I’m glad I did as it highlighted a drum sander scratch I had missed on my “by eye” inspection...
