Re: Guitar amp speaker cover, Grill etc.
I have used shade cloth (available from bunnings I think) as a speaker grille. It is readily available, comes in many colours including black and faun and seems to have the right "stretch characteristics to pull it tight over the enclosure.

Re: First Gore Steel String - Resonances
I am finding that my top resonances are dropping around 10 Hz from where you are just closed to when the guitar is strung up. I made my bridge out of walnut as shown in the book. That's useful information John. I will also be making a walnut bridge as shown in the book. Did you thin the top around ...

Re: First Gore Steel String - Resonances
Trevor and John, You were both correct in that there was a problem with the signal being fed into VA but it was not the signal level. I have a Line 6 Audio interface so I could see that the levels weren't peaking. However I had forgotten to turn off the amplifier simulation so VA was hearing a steel...

First Gore Steel String - Resonances
Trevor, After completing my first acoustic guitar, a 12 string X-braced, I have now jumped in at the deep end and am attempting the falcate braced steel string with cutaway and live back from the plans in your book. The shape/dimensions are pretty close to your plans with just the upper bout and cut...

With the current exchange rate, Exilir nanoweb from Turramurra Music for $20 seems a good deal (free shipping if you buy 3 or more).

Re: after laminated plates for an ES-335 style buld
I built an ES355 in 2011 and obtained the plates, sides and other main pieces for the body from Ken McKay of Upnorthstrings http://www.upnorthstrings.com in Michigan USA. They were great quality and, as I understand, he obtains the maple and poplar ply from the same source as Gibson did. The bad new...

Re: Problem gluing EI Rosewood
I have new re-joined the back pieces. During the preparation of the edges to make them straight I definitely had to remove more material from the ends of the joint than in the middle so Trevor's and Peter's assessment seems spot on. I used new Titebond too. When initially preparing the edges, I reca...

Re: Problem gluing EI Rosewood
Thanks Peter and Trevor for the additional advice. I will re-prepare the surfaces and ensure that I get a good fit before regluing with new glue. I carried out my non-scientific break test on the two samples I mentioned previously. Both broke along a grain line, not through the glue joint. The flesh...

Re: Problem gluing EI Rosewood
Woodsy Check out this post re Titebond glue and shelf life. http://www.anzlf.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6405#p72311 From the information in that post, the Titebond I used was made in October 2012 - just over 2 years old. It may be getting a little old but I don't think that is the problem. Here are a ...

Re: Problem gluing EI Rosewood
Starving the joint of glue may indeed be the problem. I used back to back wedges to apply pressure to the joint and squeezed it hard to get a close joint. I can do some trial joins with the off cuts, applying less pressure. Also, I think that while cleaning with acetone, I stopped while there was st...

Problem gluing EI Rosewood
I am building a Trevor Gore falcate steel string as my second acoustic build and encountered a problem with the glue joint in the East Indian Rosewood back plate. I joined the two halves using Titebond original and completed the final thicknessing to 2.2mm then cut out the shape. While I was sanding...

Re: Stiffness measurement of the top
Trevor, Ok. I understand now. So if the conventional classicals have a typical monopole mobility of ~ 20x10^-3 s/kg and a deflection of 0.2mm for a load of 1.2 kg = 12 N (I think you meant) or 11.7 N more accurately, the typical uncoupled top frequency would be 187 Hz. For your steel string, the typ...

Re: Stiffness measurement of the top
Trevor, I think I can work out the answer using equation 1.7-1 but I'm not sure what the typical uncoupled top frequency would be. From the table of test data in the link to Craig's post that you gave above, I see that the uncoupled top frequency for the Fletta classical guitars varies from 203 Hz t...

Re: Stiffness measurement of the top
Trevor,
I am also ineterested in the top stiffness you are getting with your guitars as I am attempting to build your falcate SS.
Are the deflection and load you quote above only typical for your Fleta type classical guitars? If so, what are the typical deflection and load for your falcate SS design?

I got a cheap hand held one from McJing in Sydney. You may be able to adapt one of these. Here's the link.

Re: Build thread - Blackwood & Bunya Dreadnought
For cleaning "water stains" off blackwood after bending, I used Cabot's Deck Clean. It contains oxalic acid and is available is a smaller 1l container for around $12.65 at Bunnings. It worked pretty well on my blackwood sides. I did my first trial bends on some timber (silky oak I think) that was fl...

Re: What finish to use:
I have just completed my first acoustic build and I finished it using Liberon Finishing Oil, which I understand is a similar type of finish to Tru-oil and danish oil. I don't think it "filled up the sound board". I don't think it penetrates significantly more than other finishes but I am certainly n...

Re: Tips for a virgin electirc builder.
A drawing I have of a Flying V shows the body thickness as 35mm. That is also the thickness of a Gibson SG so pickups will fit. You will need to get an L-shaped pickup selector switch to fit within that depth.

Re: Tips for a virgin electirc builder.
My first electric guitar build was a through-neck made from Tasmanian Blackwood. With a through-neck, the timber pieces are smaller and could be obtained from a specialty timber supplier. You can also get nicely figured Blackwood which would suit an oil finish.
Good luck with your build.
Good luck with your build.

Re: Tap Test after Closing Box
Trevor, I must be the slowest guitar builder around this forum. It has taken me since January to complete the guitar. However, the build seems to have worked out reasonably well. I previously wrote: With 394 gm of mass the T(1,1)2 is 179.0 Hz (181.5 Hz before thinning). With 202gm of mass it is 183....

Re: Designing 12-string guitars and baritones
The string tension will be approximately doubled, so if the braces were 26% higher (cube root of 2 = approx. 1.26) that would take care of most of the strength issues. I think stiffness of the braces is proportional to cube of depth but strength (stresses in wood) is proportional to the square of t...

Re: Tap Test after Closing Box
OK. I have done some edge thinning this weekend and achieved pretty close to 2.5mm with the top sanded to remove all tool marks and grain tear out. I have repeated the tap tests with 394gm, 202gm and no side mass loading. Generally I'm getting a reduction of around 2.0 to 3.0 Hz as a result of the e...

Re: Tap Test after Closing Box
Hi Trevor, Today, I was able to make 4 steel blocks to mass load the sides and I have some more spectrum tests with two different masses. I first added 394 grams total (2 steel blocks each side) and obtained the following result. The T(1,1)2 is at 181.5 Hz, a drop of 7 Hz or 3.7%. Figure 2.3-13 woul...

Re: Tap Test after Closing Box
Trevor, OK. I'll do some more tests. My blackwood (690 kg/m3) bridge currently weighs in at 27g and after tapering the thickness at the back edge will probably get down to about 24 grams. I'm not sure I can easily get much lower with a 12 string bridge with a curved back edge (like in fig 20-3 of wh...
