Re: bracing
So I'm about to start my next guitar build and I want to use some NZ timbers on it , specifically the top the neck and the bracing. I'm using black walnut for the back and sides and I wanted to use Pauduk for the the back bracing for some colour and strength but obviously that's not a kiwi timber a...

Re: Best Friends Warning
The next day he arrives back for some work on his guitar. Suspecting he has no money I offered him the part if he could do the job himself, he said he would like the job done properly, so I did the work. He called to pick up the guitar and spun me the same tale as before, I'll drop the money back l...

Re: Hi, introducing myself
Another book, that works well as a companion to the Mottola book, is Guitarmaking: Tradition And Technology Paperback (Cumpiano and Natelson). I got started with Cumpiano and Natelson's book...but it's now a bit dated in places. If you're using this book check out Cumpiano's website for updates on ...

I bought a set of fancy fibreglass rods from LMI but have never used them....I use lengths of 8-10mm diameter hoop pine as my go bars.

Re: Hi, introducing myself
Before attacking a real side set get your hands on some cheap sides (eg orphaned side sets from LMI) or grab a set of Stewmac practise sides.....if they still sell them.

Mick, you're responding to a post from 2015. I'm not sure if Kim is still active on the forum. The last time I heard from Kim he was having a few health issues. Ill send him an email and hopefully he'll respond to your post. Note Graham McDonald is on this forum..maybe flick him a message. Welcome t...

Re: Trouble Build
Okay..I'm happy to report that the issues I've been having with my trouble classical appear to have been fixed. I'm ashamed to say that root cause was probably a shithouse fret job. A few frets were pretty high and some were way low.....I need to work on my fret dressing skills. The refret was made ...

Re: Trouble Build
I haven't had much time in the workshop of late....been busy with my other passion...restoring old steam locomotives. Work done on the guitar so far: 1. Did a full refret. 2. Made up a new nut and rough cut slots in same. (final slot depth after relief adjustment) Just now i strung up the instrument...

Re: Nomad nut files
Thanks Martin I'll do that, don't know why I didn't think of it, I do it to my fret saw when cutting slots and small screws so they hopefully won't break. Wayne I wax up the side of the file rather than the cutting edge. The dangerous slots are the two outer slots.....especially the low E where you...

Re: Nomad nut files
I bought a set of those nut files off eBay for about $100, 6 files in the set I've used them quite a bit and they're still good, they do tend to bind up a bit if you go too deep. It was a few years ago and seemed expensive at the time, now it looks like I got a bargain. Wayne I run my nut files thr...

Re: Nomad nut files
I'm trying to locate some nut files with a rounded profile on the cutting edge of the file. I've got 4 Stewmac files that are like this but they no longer sell them. Was looking at some files made in Hiroshima japan last night....priced at $70 Ca on a a Canadian suppliers site.....$Aus220 on an Aust...

Re: Trouble Build
An update on the trouble classical. During the fret redress a couple of frets got more of a dress than I'm comfortable with so have ripped out all the frets so I can take care of a hump in the fretboard around the 2nd and 3rd frets and at the same time do some surgery on the wedge between the upper ...
