Re: Titebond Original vs Titebond III

These are two totally different glues. Titebond III is water proof, quite a bit heat resistant, never hardens completely, and its color is brown instead of the Titebond I yellow. I have used Titebond III for gluing up purfling lines that had to undergo some serious bending, which surely also could h...

Re: anyone know what this wood is?

A picture of the standing tree, leaves and so would be the better way to determine what it is. Guessing the species by looking at the wood is more often than not pure lottery.

Re: 16 inch Florentine archtop.

I want to use HHG to glue the plates on this one, just asking those who use it all the time what the best method is for gluing a large area like this, is it a rush to get it clamped up inside the open time or size both surfaces let dry and then reheat after clamping? how should i go about it? Like ...

Re: Introduction and uke course build progress

Looks good Aaron, very neat work so far! :cl I guess you can see that the heel block has vertical grain while the neck block is horizontal. They were once neighbours in the same board. If that's the worst thing I do this week, I'll be stoked! Well, it CAN'T get worse!!! Gluing those blocks with the ...

Re: Introduction and uke course build progress

That sounds like you will have a great week. Building a ukulele with Tim Spittle can't be wrong for at least two reasons: meeting Tim and using beautiful timber from his pile (and as a collateral effect you'll end up with a ukulele :) ). Looking forward to the pictures of your next day. Thanks for t...

Re: Binding channel cutter

Nice job Markus. You could grind your blades out of round High Speed Steel to fit the hole. Thank you Micheal. It is actually not a real issue with the square blade in the round hole, I only mentioned the possibility of over-tightening to prevent someone could put the blame on me if he breaks the bl...

Re: Is a centre strip necessary on a ukulele?

I think the tighter doming a plate gets forced to, the more important a center strip becomes. So, in many cases the center strip may be more important for the back than for the (hardwood-)top. For reinforcing a hardwood top you could use cleats instead of a center strip. Split wood to make thin and ...

Re: Is a centre strip necessary on a ukulele?

Hi Andrew, When joining plates, hardwood (which is commonly used for backs) can almost not at all be compressed, respectively almost does not swell when glue is applied. So every less than absolutely perfect planed edge is likely to be less strong than necessary for a long trouble-free life of the j...

Binding channel cutter

There are actually two tools needed: a cutting gage and a scraping gage. Well, make it five tools if you count in a chisel, plus a knife and needle file for clean-up). Time required to cut all channels: about one hour after having gotten familiar with the process. http://www.straordinaria.ch/guests/...

Re: Equ 4.5-5

Six hours is quite a lot of time for a relatively simple spreadsheet with less than a dozen mathematical formulas - and still not getting it right. I suggest you to split up the calculation in smaller formulas (for each parenthesis, root operation numerator, denominator etc. one formula in one cell...

Re: Equ 4.5-5

In a fit of determination I spent about six hours straight trying to get the expected value of Elong at 11.90GPa and the thickness at 2.71mm as Trevor mentions in his post of Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:04 pm. By coding the same calculations in every possible way I got answers of anywhere from an 88mm thick...

How Veritas custom handplanes are made

Even when I don't need a new tool I am searching for a specific thing on the Lee Valley website at least once per year.
Have a look at how Lee Valley cares about their custom made planes and their customers, enjoy the video! :D

Re: Woodcarver vs. Lancelot

I only have the Lancelot. It works great and is easy to sharpen (like a chainsaw). On the other hand it looks like the Arbortech disk would be foolproof to mount on the grinder (you can make mistakes mounting the Lancelot, and it surely takes a few seconds more).

Re: Dust-free thicknessing machine

Glad you find it useful. :) As I mentioned before, this is not my idea. A closely related solution, although for bringing to final thickness very thin veneer strips, is taping off a cabinet scraper (it should be a reasonably stiff scraper, 0.6 mm or more, unless one wants to create a concave profile...
