Re: Shooting boards

My straight board needs replacing and I know some of the guys in my shop struggle, Ive read that the angled board use's the full blade and give's a better finish, hence the put it out there question. Was hoping to get some plan's and then just dump them into the cnc to do it for me. :) ...

Shooting boards
Got to make myself a new shooting board. Curently its just a flat lump of wood on a flat lump of wood. Anyone got some nice ones, that I can pinch some ideas from, got some apprentices that find it hard to cut end grain on a basic unit, so Im looking at making them a ramped version or similiar Steve

Re: opinions please
If the guitar's too cheap to have a couple of dollars worth of 'extra' wood fitted in such an important area how come the customer's going to the trouble of a repair and not using it as a pizza paddle? If I said the brand name here on the web, you would be astounded, think of the top 3, it w...

Re: opinions please
Agreed, an extra screw or bolt is not going to hurt, I had three guitars today that we took the old bridges of and refitted them (they were lifting), this was becuase the manufacturer's get it wrong as well, example leaves lacquer where it shouldnt be, uses insufficient glue, doesnt fit a bridge pla...

Re: opinions please
I dont understand why people under estimate the strength of glue, properly done its as good as if not better than a screwed joint. Scarf joints are glued, certainly a smaller area of contact than a whole heel area. Bridges are glued, massive amount of tension on just a small area, body tops which su...

Mis-interpretation, martins are using just a single bolt through the neck block and into the heel

Re: opinions please
It just looks like a bad glue job, maybe a friday job.
Clean it / glue it properly and it will be fine. Doesnt need a bolt or insert, that being said nothing wrong with fitting one, martins are doing it now as a factory fit.
But glue it properly and it will be fine...

Re: Piezo help - one string is too loud
I dont think tension is your issue. Most under saddle pickups are not sensitive on the end of the pickup, for this reason you actually pocket a small hole past the end of the slot and slide the pickup into the hole. The other item I notice is the top of your saddle is flat, this is forcing the strin...

You could pop in and say hello if you want. We have a cappuccino machine in the shop, and the fridge that holds the milk doubles as the beer fridge.

Re: Frequency Spectrum
Mmm, I read it differently A sharp spike at any location is an indication of a distinct singular frequency, a flowing waveform is simply soft / large overtones. The problem with your display is you have no reject turned on, there is always unnneccasary back ground noise and you need to filter this o...

Nothing new, theres a brand name "elcometer" who have been using this principle of measurement for fifty years, I have a basic elcometer unit for non ferrous metals that was made in the 50's, they use it today to measure paint thickness's

Neck bending machine
Has anyone here made one for straightening out bent necks, we seem to be getting a few in lately 1-2 a week Im interested in making or designing one that has controlled adjustments and heat application, had enough of winging it by clamping them to a bench and heating them.. If no one has one, anyone...

Re: Loss of volume
The only real way of diagnosing is to measure the strength of the magnetic field at the string location and compare it to the others, I would concur with most other peoples thoughts that you have a dead pup, one of the pole pieces internally is not magnetised strong enough to induce the magnetic fie...

Re: Tools!
All great tools. But if I was starting out again, I would start with a bandsaw and a mounted router, the other power tools are luxurys, which you will still come to use every day, the jointer would be the one thing in my shop that accumulates more dust than wood shavings, but I still would not swap ...

Cnc for pickguards
Gotta love cnc, scan the old one in and pop out the new one. Exactly to size and scale, mounting holes perfect....Lot easier than the old way of transferring to a template board and then transferring back with a router. Quick job this morning, heres a pic of a flying vee pickguard with a new layout ...

Re: Old top colour matching
Why did you terminate the splint in the body top area and not take it all the way to the edge.
Lot harder to hide a splint that stops part way.

Well without seeing it in person, its difficult to tell.
Lets assume worst case scenario that its badly warped, whats wrong with removing frets and replaning the fretboard
Theres a lot of things that can cause fret buzz, some are very easily dealt with

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs
So just waiting for the evs kit. The vacuum pump takes up so much less space than a compressor Does vacuum work the same as pressure, that is can you put a pressure regulator in the line to wind down the amount of available vacuum, I ask becuase the current rig up allows you to display available and...

Re: Setup "in-the white"
I would discourage you gluing and then trying to release, the potential for burning the top when heating or having tear out when attempting to seperate, is too high.
