Re: Unbalanced veneer on headstock

It can be done without problem, just requires planning - as with all aspects of building. Conversely to what others have mentioned too, make sure it is also not so thick that you've reduced the amount of tapered shaft where the string wraps - potentially effectively reducing the "angle" of the heads...

Re: Alternative timbers and the american influence

A few things to mention here. Yes, certainly customer demand and expectation plays its part in what gets used to build a custom guitar. On the factory side of things, Maton and Cole Clark have been using and promoting Australian species for a long while. Having been involved in the industry in one w...

New Listings @ Australian Guitar Tonewood!

Hi all! Well, our site has been operational for just about one month now, with our first orders in, dispatched in a timely fashion and well received by the purchasers. We've also had plenty of feedback - all positive thus far! As well as some valued suggestions, with thanks to those who've had their...

Re: Bending wood alternatives...

Gidgee is certainly on the harder end of bending scales as far as species go. Due diligence is required! It can depend on the depth of the curl and the grain deviation for sure. I've done highly ringed Gidgee into ukulele radii before, so it is possible. It was a nice tight, even figure so the fibre...

Charango time!

Hi all. Thought I'd post this out of my interest in luthierie more broadly. Just had a Charango come into my possession for a short period. A friend of mine owns and plays it, however has elected not to take it overseas on travel, so he left it in my hands instead. Foolish man! It's already been pho...

Couldn't help myself...

How is this guitar related? Granted it's a stretch... But that's why it's in "Anything Goes" after all. So I'm rather new to the concept of "crowdfunding". I've heard of it of course, but never really investigated too far. That changed not long ago when someone put me onto a worthy cause. Hell...

Re: Rock Maple Body Blanks? Where to buy / alternate tonewoods?

Hi Simon.

I've got a bit of Rock Maple stashed away, figured and plain. Old stock I've had for over 15 years. I can check dimensions etc for anything suitable and let you know if you're really keen.

Let me know.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Re: Bending wood alternatives...

Hi Viento. I'm going to assume you mean bindings , not linings , as that's a fairly exorbitant use of snakewood if not!! But with respect to Blackwood or Koa, they are so similar in characteristics (genetically also very closely related) that I doubt you will notice a difference in bending, ...

Ah Rod, I haven't forsaken you! Or work with the materials at hand and what they dictate ...

Re: Wipe-on finish for acoustic guitar

Not all 0000 steel wools are created equal.

That Liberon stuff Martin mentioned is amazing - like cotton wool.

The Sifa stuff sold commonly through bunnings and other hardwares, is far more coarse by comparison.

Never tried synthetics.

Re: Edge Sander Opinions

Sleake - Like many tools, I'd address this issue by using a 'sub/false table base' (waste board) with near zero clearance for smaller or more delicate work. The mitre track allows you to lock one in place. Note, not 'zero' clearance given you need somewhere for the dust to go. But the same problem ...
