Re: What would be your pic out of these two Rimu backs? A or

I'm into B. I have boring sensibilities though. Lots of boldly contrasting stripes and things to me look noisy and cluttered once figured in to the total design of the guitar. It might look okay by itself on the stand, but we gotta look good holding it in front of the mirror, too, don't we?

Re: Target Coatings EM6000 Waterborne Lacquer

So have many of you got your hands dirty with the EM6000 yet and have impressions on it? Like a lotta folks I'd love an eco-friendly alternative to nitro (and hey, anything that sands better). I've only had a little experience with waterborne finishes and wasn't very happy with it. Witness lines wer...

Commiseration thread for those of us stuck on all this math.

Whew! Anyone else struggling to wrap their head around most of it? I recently took an intermediate algebra course after fifteen years without a single thought about numbers and I was able to ace it -- it required teaching myself long division all over again, i.e. it was a LOT of catching up -- so I ...

Congrats Australia -- wind energy now cheaper than coal, gas

http://about.bnef.com/2013/02/07/renewable-energy-now-cheaper-than-new-fossil-fuels-in-australia/ Well, sort of. Old coal is still cheaper than new wind. I had the idea that coal is pretty big in Australia so this surprised me a little that these strides were made there, but maybe it shouldn't have...

Re: Ideas?: Executing the side stripe on this Martin & Coupa

Thanks everybody, some great ideas. Time permitting I ~might~ actually try this seeing as I have a billet I can cut out some more side wood if the first attempt fails. Now I just need something long as straight enough to act as a guide for the laminate trimmer...

I've always wanted a spruce/maple dread. Excellent work. That's a maple neck, too, I assume?

Re: #16 completed

Great jigs! Certainly better than the ones I've thrown together. I'll probably be lifting some elements from you in the future, thanks! I'm not a fan of cutaways either except for maybe on archtops, but I'm becoming more and more into 12 fret guitars where there is greater necessity for them. ...

Ah yeah! I've seen his guitars with the crazy dovetailed tops before. I'll definitely sending him an e-mail since I don't think C.F. Martin is checking his these days.

Re: Ideas?: Executing the side stripe on this Martin & Coupa

I think the easiest way would be to groove the sides before bending and inlay after closing the box. A few tests wouldn't hurt. Alignment at the tail block gets more precise. Yeah, the more I think about it this seems like the most viable option, given that the long with-the-grain channel routed ou...

Ideas?: Executing the side stripe on this Martin & Coupa

This one's got me stumped, I'm hopin' some of you could spitball some ideas and we can figure this out! http://www.vintagemartin.com/MartinCoupaSpanish.html http://www.vintagemartin.com/MartinCoupaSpanish_Side_012s.jpg Join the sides before bending? They'll just come apart under heat and moisture. J...

Re: GLue strength testing worth a look

That was interesting, I love little tests like this. I wish there was one with an finely-sanded/burnished surface. I can imagine how that one would turn out, but it would have been nice to have seen the direct comparison.

Re: Silly question about mass-loading sides.

Ah, thank you. That one didn't come up in my searches. It's about what I figured. I don't have any steel or brass around in the right dimensions, so it might be the mending braces after all. I've still got tons to absorb in the book, too. It's a lot for a guy who just had his first algebra class in ...

Re: Silly question about mass-loading sides.

The Design book illustrates what appear to be some kind of lead weights with a bolt through the center, but falls short (unless I've completely overlooked something!) in disambiguating them. I might experiment layering up some mending braces, it's just that if anyone looked in the sound hole it migh...

Silly question about mass-loading sides.

Hey everyone! This is my first post so I'll get the intro out of the way: My name's Nate, I'm just a student builder in the second year of a luthiery program invading your board from the states (though I did live in Auckland for a time). I hope to stick around a while. Anyway. I've had the Gore/Gill...
