shellac as a barrier coat

got a couple of projects underway that call for a colour next to a clear finish -eg black headstock face and vintage tint headstock. I am using mirotone and 3220 and and mohawk solid colours. I am experiencing the colour bleeding into the the clear. Dewaxed blonde shellac sprays on pretty good over ...

i rout them with the material on top of the template. how can it get scratched?
dont use too much ds tape - some ds tapes grab harder than others

Re: Carbatec Drum Sander

looks like the trick clip on the performax is on the lhs looking from infeed side.
the carbatecs is on rhs and largely obscured from view. i find a mirror quite helpful and if the paper breaks off at the clip i simply stick it to the drum with contact adhesive.

Re: neck laminate glue

thanks martin - its not a dovetail but a long tenon + mortise join -
a reasonable size glue surface compared to a dovetail which apparently done properly requires glue only to hold it in position

Re: Routing pickguards

on a router table cutting and beveling a pick guard is a few minutes work
i use an mdf template and a straight flute pattern follower to cut the shape
a 45deg bevel pattern follower to cut the bevel
the most time consuming part is setting the bevel bit at the correct hieght

Re: nearly out of truss rods

If they're the ones I'm thinking they are, they're one of the cheapest and nastiest truss rods on the market. About a centimetre wide give or take and nearly as deep? First of all, that much timber removal in the neck is something that i'd like to avoid, which is one reason the welded LMI or Allied...

Re: nearly out of truss rods

just got a two way in from guitaraust. similar to other two way rods in design with a handy little twist it is enclosed in a sheath of plastic and the adjusting head is inside a chromed metal tube - the attraction is that the mechanism is protected from the incursion of glue - downside is you cant s...

Re: saddle reslot

If you are filling it and routing the opposite way then fill it and string it up. Place a small price of wood as a substitute for saddle position to achieve string height at the 12 th and tune open and check 12th, move the small piece of wood back or forward until intonation is achieved, just like ...

Re: Wipe-on finish for acoustic guitar

tru-oil cures by oxidation and will not redissolve with solvent. i tried it myself a few years ago on a maple neck and i didn't like the way it built up around the frets i had around 8 coats of the stuff off that neck in 15 minutes flat using acetone - the one that is damn hard to get off is danish...

rusty truss rod - how to condition it?

I have an old SG gibson in with an up bow problem - got the TR adjuster nut off with the application of heat but find the truss rod itself is rusty for around 60% of the thread - just wondering if i should use a rust converter to stabilise it - my fear is that it may react with the brass and form a ...
