What pore fill method are you combining with this one and how long have you been using/testing it? Does it apply much like the pre-cat lacquer? Same multi coat approach...

Hey Joel. **Disclosure** I currently work for Carbatec. Those who know me however, know that my opinions are my own and as unbiased as possible, not pushing any particular brand loyalty, but sharing my experience with many brands of machinery over many years in the industry. Apologies, but there is ...

Re: RIP Jim Williams

Oh, sad indeed.

Jim's book was one of the first two I owned over 20 years ago and I still have it. Some of my very first jigs built were based on Jim's suggestions and it certainly played it's part in getting me hooked in this craft.

Thanks for the post Graham.

R.I.P. Jim.

I have used Organoil's Hard Burnishing oil very sparingly with success for years. Various suppliers. To the best of my knowledge, it is a drying oil - though possibly not as much as others as I don't think it uses any synthetic catalysts or hardeners. Oil wise, it is a blend of tung, citrus and euca...

In short to answer your question, no, I haven't personally. Martin is right in that you may run into trouble, but also may not, as others have found. It is a risk as customs are within their right to check and demand the correct paperwork, but likely don't check every parcel still. With so many vali...

Re: pattern makers vise at Carbatec at last!

Thanks for the feedback Frank! You are very much mostly correct. StewMac used to sell this same vise, but "upgraded" it to their current version some time ago, hence it is a slightly more expensive vise with custom modifications. I tried to get some of these features added, but they are currently un...

Re: Tru Oil alternatives

Danish oil, or the Cabots variety at least, contains polyurethane (among other driers etc) - hence why you can 'build' a finish of higher gloss with it than other oils. Like applying multiple thin coats of polyurethane. It does "yellow" somewhat. Polyurethane itself is generally frowned upon and not...

Re: Tru Oil alternatives

Has anyone tried Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil on a guitar? I've used it on furniture (seems OK, dries hard fairly quickly) but not on a guitar. A light first coat will likely prevent too much penetration. Yes Trevor, I have several times and I'm not the only luthier I know of that has. I've used it...

Geez though, wish I'd thought of that lining technique. To think I spend time carefully bending it to shape when all I had to do was break it every couple of centimeters  What have I been thinking?

Good luck Rod.

What does it smell like if you sand a little? There are several Dalbegia's (true Rosewood's) that could look like that, as Martin suggested, Indian being one, Brazilian another potential. 100% ID will be difficult, but smell will help. Weight would too but may be difficult with the shape and any pot...

Cool. Nice prize for someone.

For what it's worth, it looks like Blackwood to me. I've handled plenty of material I know to be Blackwood that has looked just like that.

It is a highly variable timber.
