Re: Tasmanian Blackwood Build thread
Wiring and soldering look very neat.....something I like. Since I'm using clear transparent black cavity covers, I have to have some neatness to the wiring. The guitar I did the day before this one is much neater. The soldering on the tabs etc is neat using a regualar solder iron, however the large...

Re: Tasmanian Blackwood Build thread
Is That Capacitor on Steroids ???? What is It ? You'll find that most high quality guitars have larger capacitors. Not so much factory made guitars, but those that are handmade boutique style. This one is a Russian Capacitor (they apparently make some of the best available) - its 0.022uf, old style...

HK GTS Monaro here... all the bits sitting here for a full rebuild to ~roughly~ original specs, plus a 540ci, 8/71, fuel injected big block. Looking for 1200hp :P I'm having massive engine envy right now!!! Mine is just a 350 bored out to 357 with around 400 horses! I'm guessing this won't be a ste...

Re: Gluing side purfling to binding?
I believe he's asking how to clamp - not what sort of glue. Most people use tape. Some others use rope or rubber straps. I googled "gluing purfling" and heres plenty of pics that will demonstrate: https://www.google.com.au/search?q=gluing+purfling&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=...

Re: SG Pickguard info needed
I'm definitely no Fender or Gibson expert, as I generally deal with more modern style brands, however I can assure you that there anre many variations of the pickguards etc on all those guitars, so you really need to be careful whicon ones you buy. Screw holes, pickup position and configuration diff...

Re: Workshop tour - lets see yours!
For several years this was my workshop - one bench and a couple old shelves up the back wall. No lights. No power and like I said before - when I wanted to route I had to join several extension leads to take the router out there from the house. No jointers or thicknessers or linishers or anything fa...

It just sits in the shed, :( :( :( :( Awesome! I love camaro's! I also like the firebirds that were the twins on these We should start a new thread just for the car conversation! My last 3 cars have been chevies, a 76 corvette coupe, a 70 corvette convertible and the 57 I've got at the moment. I'll...

Re: Workshop tour - lets see yours!
Allan, Mine would fit in there about 25 times. As would my previous one, the size of one car space, gravel floor, one workbench, no electricity and only three walls! How my first guitars were all built. If I wanted to route I had to join several extension leads to get power out there! Apart from ro...

Re: Scarf Joint - Planer Sled
I've got a '57 chevy which I have high pressure hosed about three times and I've never vacuumed inside. Whilst on cars, got an old chevy myself, sat in the shed for 3 years now due to lack of time, revved her to hard when showing off 3 years ago and snapped the engine mounts and bent the bonnet, no...

Some really nice work you have going there Allen, all good looking guitars but I particularly like the biomech design Thanks. and from the PC it is difficult to understand how you can say it turned out so so. It's a perception thing maybe, like when I clean my car I'd swear it feels better to drive, and I get more enjoyment using it. You clean your car? hahaha I've never washed my HQ ute the whole time I've owned it (several years) and I've got a '57 chevy which I have high pressure hosed about three tim...

Re: Aussie guy from VIC -new member intro
Rather than start a new thread just to post a video, I thought I'd add it to this one. Heres one of four builds that I've had running consecutively, one of them is in a build thread on this site, the tassy blackwood SS6. (SS6 just means 6 string Superstrat) Well this build is same shape/carve but di...

Re: Scarf Joint - Planer Sled
Do you check the cut with a straight edge before gluing? That is something I always do. Vertical, horizontal and diagnal. I was doing this joint for a while using the linisher, but holding it at the exact angle was hit and miss, just like dragging it across the jointer without a sled is hit and mis...

Re: Scarf Joint - Planer Sled
Im lost just a bit anyway, why does it matter whether the top of the neck is going to be perfectly square, unless this is like prep work for a peghead overlay Theres two surfaces that can be used in scarf joints, some people (old school) laminate underneath, a more modern version laminates on top. ...

Re: Scarf Joint - Planer Sled
I do mine on the table saw using a jig.....usually only need a few swipes with the plane and they get glued up. Ive done them on the bandsaw as well and have never needed to do much finishing with a plane to get a good joint. I used to use a jig for my mitre saw and had similar results, looked like...

My bandsaw blade is probably only a month old! I'd never trust a joint fresh off a blade. I'd rather plane them every time.Allen wrote:You gotta get a better bandsaw and blade. Mine comes off the saw ready to glue. Did 4 today in about 5 minutes total from board to clamped up.

Nice idea Allan....I wont actually use it as I am a bit of a hand plane junkie and use my BS to make the cut and my trusty planes to true the surface...but its a nice idea! :) John I also make the initial cut with a bandsaw. I like to use a hand plane on some jobs, but with a critical joint like th...
