Re: The mighty L1

Taffy, I think the best finish for a finger board is finger oil. I guess I consider it a blues guitar so any discoloring is fair wear & tear. Hopefully the discoloring will be on the whole neck. :lol: Lillian, TY, I like the figure of walnut also. I've seen a lot of wood on this site with as much or...

Re: Douglas fir for OM style guitar top?

As a side note. I used to make a living remodeling old houses in Calif. Most were stick framed with DF. 50-75 years ago good older growth was a plentiful & common building material. The stuff can dry and season and be incredibly hard and stong. Tough stuff for a softwood. It was a bastid to demo out...

Cool thread Allen. It will be fun following along. Those soundholes look great BTW. Same as the last one it looks like. Has a better look to me than a single port up there. I'm curious what your top thickness was after you routed? I listened to the Smallman interview a while back, so I kinda underst...

Re: Bracing Question (Yes that old chestnut!)

I remember back in my construction days that drilling any hole in glu-lams (laminated engineered beams) was a big deal. The engineers would come running with load calcs and such showing how much a simple 1 inch hole for a conduit degraded the beam's integrity. My simple understanding of wood is that...

At the risk of asking the obvious; Why not just patch the hole? Clean up the hole, Overlap a patch on the inside, and flush matching wood out. Not uber elegant but considering the hole....

Hey Craig;
Not sure if it will help but take a look for dental bits. They are pretty cheap and come in mm sizes. Their limits seem to be in depth of cut (6-8mm). I can round up a link if you'd like.

Re: Bracing on a King Billy Top

Hey Bob; Your wood looks a lot like the coastal redwood here in CA. tight grain, light, but weaker than spruce. I've only built 3 guitars out of redwood, my 2nd, 3rd, and one of the L1's I posted here a while back. If your King Billy is like I think it is, I think you're spot on. Thicker top with lo...
