Re: Hi. First time builder Questions.

I would say buy a kit first. Seen to many unfinshed projects becuase it got the better of the builder, even wuith the kits theres a big learning curve, jigging shaping clamping gluing sanding finishing fretting and so forth, all these are big hurdles for young fellas new to the game. Buy one build o...

Re: Spray equipment

Yes the pressure pots are good fior large deposits of paint, for a fine deposit rate as that required for lacquering you need a gun with a better tip control, ideally a LVHP, low volume high pressure will give a fine finish the other style HVLP w high volume low pressure will also work but you need ...

How bad can a job be, before you tell them to go away

Music stores in perth do the majority of there own work, however when the jobs get a bit more difficult they farm the jobs out to various repairers. This came in on saturday from one of the stores. The customer wants it to be electrically working, no buying new parts 3 single coils - all 3 are dead ...

Re: Building a paint booth

Yep, epa here in perth certify your booth to comply with current legislation, worksafe require epa to sign of on the booth for it to be commisioned. For info those that were not aware, apparently any blasting unit be it at home at work, use garnet, ally, soda whatever needs to have a certification t...

Re: Guitar #1.

Thats exceptional mate.
Most people that start out, bu ordering a kit, or buy nice presized and thicknessed new wood, using recycled timber is a stage a lot further on, so you doing it out of recycled timber to start with makes it an excellent first build

Re: Shelf life of nitro

Shelf lifes not a big concern, I actually had a discussion with distributors from azkonobel, who supply me with all my 2 packs. I had some metallic paint (4 ltrs) that was close to 12 years old, the shelf life was one year from purchase, I discussed the situation with the distributor, apparently the...

Now Im working on the extraction area of the booth, making filter cartridge holders, ran out of steel, so its not going to be done this weekend, have to wait for next weekend to finish that one, at least I get a break from welding.

Re: Building a paint booth

Last one and we are caught up to where I am The biggest issue I have, like probably everyone else is simple little touch ups, or a bit of air brush work, so within the booth Ive made a small area for just doing little jobs, if your doing some skull and cross bone graphics on a guitar you dont need a...

Re: Building a paint booth

Nothing wrong with pointing out the facts. Waggle away. You may mention something I had not considered yet. Only a couple more to take me up to where I actually am. This one is now the entrance side of the booth, the mesh area is for locking inlet filters into place, below that is simply going to be...

Re: Building a paint booth

Next photo, the roof. Theres also recess's in the frame work for 4 fluoro lights to sit external to the booth, you can see one of them sitting up in there at the moment, Once the sheeting is up, just have to have glass fitted to the light openings and silastic them in place, then the lights simply s...

Re: Building a paint booth

Spot on kim, I actually ran everything past the EPA when deciding to go ahead, It has to be fully compliant and certified by them before it can be commisioned, its the details that will stop you. Funny things like the filter housing edges have to have rubber that will prevent unfiltered particles fr...

Re: Plek machine - your thoughts

So just a little resurection, regarding the direction of this. After much discussion about buying the plek machine its fallen through. For info the cost was ridiculous, but I was willing to allocate funds for purchase (cost 125k). However it appears you dont get to buy the machine outright(well you ...

Building a paint booth

So I have a small paint booth 1200 by 1000 by 1500 high. However it doesnt allow you to work around the instrument, always been an issue with me, but space can be difficult at times. Ive got a new area of floor put in,(3.4 by 3.4metres) so time to get a good paint booth, however, talk about not chea...

Re: Bulls Eye Shellac

I do see your point that both are essentially hydrocarbons. I was confused by your description for turps as a "white spirit" hydrocarbon solvent.. Apologies, I did not mean to confuse the situation, we mix a fresh cup of turps and shellac almost every day, my favorite restoration mix Regarding the ...

Re: Bulls Eye Shellac

Nah its all easy.

White spirits is a hydrocarbon solvent (not alcohol)
Mineral Turps is a white spirit hydrocarbon solvent (not alcohol)
Methylated spirits is an alcohol solvent

Shellac needs an alcohol based solvent to dissolve

Re: Bulls Eye Shellac

Ive gotten a bit lost in this post, so Ill just jump in. When using shellac I only use methylated sprits not white spirits. White spirits is just another name for mineral turps which will not work with shellac.
