335/archtop style question

I've been thinking lately about one of my favourite electric guitar types - the 335. In particular, I've been thinking about how the tops and backs are carved out of a thick billet. Seems a bit wasteful to me and I was wondering if the top and back of a 335 style could be made domed across the whole...

Re: Latest builds

They look great. I've been wanting to try the Tonerider P90's for ages. I'm a bit of a Tonerider fan myself and I've mostly used their A2 humbuckers. Don't recommend the Rock Song pickups, they sound congested to me and I can't get them sounding good at all.

Where did you get the wood?

You also have to have your brain wired like a pencil pushing bureaucrat with totally useless Uni degrees that has never worked in anything productive in their entire life. Re: Brisbane humidity

I'm in a similar situation. Moved to the Augustine Heights area end of last year, I have a 6 x 3m shed that I've insulated. But it's got a roller door... no hope of sealing the place up unless I do some major alterations. So I think I'll need to make myself a dry box. I've been toying with using a p...

Welcome to Australia mate!

I'm moving to Brisbane in the new year, so I'm watching this thread with interest. Lost of good tips for materials and tools.

Re: bandsaw opinions

Thanks everyone for your helpful opinions. Once I do choose a machine it seems the best advice has been to get high quality blades. Anyone know where I can get good blades in Adelaide? I've found plenty of places offering sharpening services but not the blades. Carbide tipped seems to be referred to...

Re: bandsaw opinions

Thanks everyone for your opinions. My main motivation is to buy a tool of quality, that will last me a long long time, and be a pleasure using. I'm sick and tired of making do. And I've grown to loathe needing to fiddle and tweak second rate gear every time I need to use it. It will also need to wit...

bandsaw opinions

I've researched myself in circles. So I've come here to ask you fine people your advice. I'm shopping for a bandsaw. I want a good one. I've narrowed down my choices to; Laguna 14Twelve, and Hare & Forbes BP-355 The Laguna is at the very top of budget. The H&F is cheaper, but physically bigger in fo...

1st box closed - spectrograph result

Happy new year everyone! Well, I finally closed the box on my first build (Hooray for me!). It's beginning to look like a guitar! I began building years ago, well before I had the Design and Build books. But I thought I'd take a spectrograph of the freshly closed body and see how my extremely amateu...

Re: New build

It's a beautiful guitar. One day I'll make an archrival style guitar. But first a silly question. Why are the tops carved? Why not steam/heat pressed or steam shaped a bit like sides are?

Re: Spectrum Analyze - Android App

Thanks Steve.

That adapter looks like the old PS3 singstar game microphone. Wonder if that'd work?

Any chance of PMing me your app hack details? Or even put it on this thread for other budget minded builders out there?

Re: Spectrum Analyze - Android App

I was about to post a question about what microphone and recording interface people use, and I found this post!

How have you found this app over the last year? Has anyone else used this app? Free is always better than paying for equipment I'll rarely use.

Just make sure to tap tune the house structure. Walls should be 4 semitones higher than the roof resonance freq!

Re: Pau Ferro fingerboards

I'm doing my first fretboard, so I have very little experience. I've started with Minnerichi. I sawed the fret slots before I started to radius with a router based radius jig. The wood is very hard and I've found that the edges are very prone to chipping. I've got 2mm to go to get to final thickness...

Shellac. A story and some questions.

Who knew that Shellac was such a black art? The internet hasn't been very helpful. Most searches return forums with half truths or conflicting opinion. I’ve got some articles that describe the basic process of making and using it, but there isn’t much fact around when things appear to go wrong. The ...

Is CF necessary?

Hi all, I'm interested in buying the books (perhaps as an early Xmas pressie to myself). I'm still on my first build, building to Cumpiano's book mainly (I started before these books came out. Its a long story...) But before I do, I'd like to know if carbon fiber and epoxy is required to build to th...
