Re: Finishing a four-string ukulele as an 8-string instrument.

There are too many variables to suggest whether you would be successful in changing to a 6 or 8 string at this stage. But I would suggest you proceed with some caution as the string tension does jump more than you might imagine. I'll quote myself from an old thread on a six string tenor I built year...

Re: help me iD this wood please?

Pete's had the same thoughts as me! Or is that I've had the same thoughts as him...? Anyhow, definitely resembles a Pterocarpus species (Paduak) or Bubinga. Another possibility in the same family is Narra/New Guinea Rosewood - perhaps more likely than Andaman Paduak, simply as the latter is not as c...

Re: Carbon fibre source

G'day Ross. I've purchased from "Carbon Fiber Australia" as well. The "thread" you refer to is called "tow". They do sell it wrapped on a cardboard spool, but they only have 6K or 12K like that. See here - http://www.carbonfiber.com.au/category9_1.htm Otherwise if you want 3K tow, they sell "Plain C...

Re: Advice on shipping my stash

Hi Aaron. 3 months in a container is not ideal, but survivable. Humidity and temperature swings will be buffered by sealed packaging as mentioned. I'd also make sure the ends of the timber pieces themselves are sealed first and that your sets are nice and tightly bundled together flat, potentially b...

Australian Guitar Tonewood - Closing Down

Hi all. I am sorry to inform you Australian Guitar Tonewood will be closing indefinitely. Many of you are already aware that we were unexpectedly having to relocate our household and business - news that broke earlier this year. This ultimately, has now become more than 2000km in nature! The i...

Re: What's on your bench?

Here was the last thing I had "on the bench", made from rescued old Rimu bookcases our department were going to throw in a waste taker. Made it for my new-ish (4 months old now) first grandson it's a copy of a commercially available model but I made a few 'enhancements'. The bent bits were all lami...

Re: New Build - Falcate OM

King Billy pine for the bracing....I'd re-consider the choice of woods. It's not so much the species as the piece. Although KB at it's best still does not really reach the standards set by the spruces, it should be capable of the job. King Billy Pine seems to vary quite a bit in stiffness. I've had...

I've never seen such dedication to quality assurance and stress testing!

That said, I do think Trevor's deflection test rig is a little less cumbersome for the average builder.

Check with the distributor or manufacturer or else, stick with your paste wa...

@Brent - Might be an obvious question, but are your prices in $CAD (Canadian dollars)? Apologies if this is listed somewhere - I could not find it. Interesting comment Allen. @Nick - Ha! Fortunately, it's reasonably handy over here as it's an Aus product. Indeed, there are builders who do not oil their fretboards at ...

Re: does mass of the nut matter?

Even more so, we are talking about the mass difference between two different size nuts - not even a nut or no nut. The difference would be very small and you'd be doing pretty well to concern yourself with that over other more pressing issues. Now, a compensated zero fret on the other hand... There'...

Re: Fretboard oil.

First thing I'd clarify is that you only mean the fretboard? Your title says fretboard, but your post says neck. As above. Not olive oil. Not Danish. Products like the one Martin mentions are often mineral oil or synthetic based, which I'm usually a little cautious about - though I should clarify I'...
