Re: Are there any guitar builders close to Palmerston North,

Whilst many people seem to have made respectable guitars following either the Cumpiano or the Kinkead method, many haven't and there's reasons for that which you can read about here and here , which are just a couple of references for these issues that continue to arise. Basically, if you follow th...

Re: Are there any guitar builders close to Palmerston North,

Hi Richard , When I did my build, using the Kinkade book I shaped the dishes with the compass plane then fine tuned with a radiused stick with sand paper. There was a bit of a method getting the depths accurate with a feeler gauge and a router first, If you didn't have the plane I think the Kinkade...

Re: Are there any guitar builders close to Palmerston North,

Hi All and again, thanks for all the advice. Nice work Ken - thanks for posting. I see you got a Stu Mac truss rod, I have the rod to make mine but need to bend it and thread it. Thanks for the offer Shane. I'm sure I could pop down for a day. I'll talk it over with my wife for some possible dates -...

Re: Are there any guitar builders close to Palmerston North,

Hi all and thanks for the suggestions. Crafty Fox, any pics would be welcome. How did you integrate the removable tenon with Kinkade's trussrod, or did you use the Cumpiano style truss rod (for which I have the bits). Did you drill a truss rod access hole in brace 'C'. Did you use the revised Cumpia...

Are there any guitar builders close to Palmerston North, NZ?

Hi Folks I'm trying to make my first guitar, based on the Kinkead book (although I'm possibly going to go with a bolt-on neck as it seems a bit more forgiving). I'm not sure whether this will be a one-off or whether the bug will bite and I'll want to make more. Anyway, there is such an array of tech...

Hi folks Thanks for all the input! G'day Hesh, my daughter is nearly 10 - sounds like a steel string is the way to go - although I'm sure she would like Bach, her favorite is Brooke Fraser, a local singer. Regarding the books, they are winging their way already. I have found a U-tube site demonstrat...

Thanks Dennis Erik's thread is, I suppose, exceptional. I've snooped about woodwork forums for a year or two and never seen anything like it. I'd be proud to hang that first jig he made on my lounge wall and some of his photos would make it into our local art gallery. I'm really looking forward to a...

Re: Not sure I qualify to be here...but I'm here anyway

G'day folks I have never built a guitar in my life ... A few days ago I woke up with a little voice in my head...build a guitar Richard, build a guitar. ... ... My daughter is learning guitar so I suppose making something half decent for her is my motivation. Richard, I am exactly one guitar past y...

Hi again everyone Thanks for all the further comments and welcomes. It always amazes me how helpful folks are on these forums. I had a similar experience with harp making. And dovetailed plane making for that matter...another addictive passtime. Thanks for the link to Allied Lutherie Martin - there ...

Hi all Thanks for the welcome. Hi again Martin! I just had a look at Graham's web site. Amazing stuff. There must be a few Luthiers up North as well. There was a guitar and a mandolin in the "Ancient Kauri Kingdom showroom" when we visited earlier this year...made from swamp kauri. Absoulutely exqui...

Not sure I qualify to be here...but I'm here anyway

G'day folks I have never built a guitar in my life and can't play one either. I do play the trumpet, but so far have failed to make a wooden one. I have made a couple of harps which I have enjoyed learning to play a little ... once I figured out that they don't have a mouthpiece. Anyway, none of tha...
