That is just awesome Jim. Your guitar is a real beauty, but geez the track that you put down sounds really professional.
I reckon you need to do a few more of these,

Re: Good Hide Glue Supplier in Australia?
But the kind fella said there was some australian quarantine issues to getting the hide glue in to australia. I called Quarantine and was given the impression it'll cost a 100 bucks (or something like) to let it through, which is too much. Hi Jake, I just bought some hide glue from overseas (from T...

Without a maker's stamp, I guess it would be hard to accurately date this bass. Would you hazard any rough guesses?matthew wrote:Bottom block area shows previous repairs as you’d expect from a bass of this age.
As the others have said - a really interesting thread. Thanks for being so thorough.

Re: Scarf Joint
Thanks very much everyone for your responses. Sounds like either option is fine, if done well. Well, I got into this position because I wanted to get the neck glued up before lunch - not my best effort. I'm going to re-do it.

Scarf Joint
I'm sure that this hasn't happened to anyone else here before, but I've just made an impromptu change to my neck design (some may call it a cock-up). Rather than having the scarf joint under the peghead veneer, this one's going to be under the fretboard. I was just reviewing my design (discovered my...

That's scary. It didn't appear in the lists above. Perhaps we were relying too much on Google to serve up everything in the cache without us searching deeper. Hi Frank,
Check out the Milburn tutorial (http://www.milburnguitars.com/fpbannerframes.html. There's a section on dissolving the shellac.
I dissolved some flakes recently & it took about an hour before they were fully dissolved.

Steve

Thanks Allen - that gives me another option. The last time that I bent some binding/purflings, I thought that I got a whiff of something more araldite-ish when things got a bit warm. Nice to know that I can go with the options that I've got at hand. Steve In this thread this is the last re-construct...

Thanks Steve - that does answer it. I have been pondering the method lately & was wondering how people get it done with a stacked heel. Steve - from the pictures, you laminate after your neck is cut to roughly to the right shape. How do you go about getting the cut surfaces on the neck dead-flat, prior to gluing? These pieces go through the drum sander?

Re: Take 3 Khaya Senegalensis
Maybe you could get some of that blue plumbers glue and put a coat on the ends as well. That's where a lot of your moisture will get out first. Bondcrete also works a treat. We've often used it at work on log-ends to reduce end-splitting. Dries clear, so not quite as attractive as the plumbers glue...
