Re: Dulcimers and Weissenborns

Nothing ususual, I mask off, cut with a knife and peel it off. I polish the bridge to satin, apply a little epoxy, rub off and wax. Then I cover the think in frog tape and glue on. Remove the frog tape and clean up any scuffs, rewax. Done.

Re: Dulcimers and Weissenborns

Superb.

Are you spraying the bridges too? Are the fixed bridges sprayed on or off the body?

Really nice dulcimer design Paul. Did you laminate the bwb to the plastic tortoise binding yourself?

Re: Lay flat fire hose

The advantage is even pressure, and quicker. So less variation when I take the clamps off. I clamp the fretboard on using 6mm locating pins, and the neck and fretboard match in size (cut off the same template) so clean up won't be an issue. For glueing on head veneers it will a lot less like wrestli...

Re: Lay flat fire hose

No luck at the fire station, but found this firm online: http://www.southernhose.com.au/ They sell lay flat hose by the metre, which is ideal. A couple of metres' is about $60 inc postage. In case you're wondering, the hose is to make a bladder press - ski makers use them to laminate skis. I plan to...

Luthier to luthier podcast

American luthier Michael Bashkin interviewed me the other week for his Luthier on Luthier podcast which is hosted by Fretboard Journal.

Great sharpening set up

I've been using a variation on this set up for years - which I first saw on Youtube in another Japanese video.

Worth watching the whole thing - its the best solution I've found for narrow chisels and plane blades. And no, the jig does not make your blades curved.

No, I laminate my sides in a press. That's sorted. This is for glueing fretboards and head veneers.

Lay flat fire hose

Anyone have any offcuts of lay flat fire hose? 75mm wide+, 50cm long +? I'd like to make a clamp using one but don't really want to buy 30m of the stuff to do so.

Re: Carving necks on the spindle moulder

No slots at all Steve? However you do it, you wouldn't want to raise the axis of the jigs' rotating part. It would take the neck too high over the cutter. You could run it like a big bench hook - that is how I cut the tenon on the spindle. But if you did that you'd need a different set up for the st...

Re: Carving necks on the spindle moulder

The latest version of the jig - working well. Fingers out of harms way and the jig is easily adjustable.

Re: Guitar sides

I'm actually in the process of making a long video about this process. There are many benefits, approaches and options. The video should be for sale in the new year. I've been building guitars with laminated sides for years.

Looks good, the issue for me has always been lack of work and personal time to actually make one.

When you make one available for sale, I will be at front of the que :D

Re: Carving necks on the spindle moulder

Only got a Facebook link, I'll post a proper video when I've remade the jig. But it works! Stick around to the end, you'll see the neck, straight off the machine with about 5 seconds of sanding with 180 grit.

Re: custom cases

Actually Pete, I typed "custom case maker QLD" into Google rather than searching the whole country. Spoke to a feller who sells these:

http://www.qldcase.com.au/wp-content/up ... n/1700.pdf

Its a gun case. With custom cut foam we're be looking around the $600 mark.

Re: custom cases

If I had the space to make them, I would! I know Jack Clark who used to make Stefan Sobells cases said the real pain was lining them. Making shells is messy work but not so difficult. Now with laser cutting of foam, it should be a bit quicker than it used to be. Very frustrating that the firms who a...

custom cases

Been trying to get a reply from 4 different custom case makers in Australia, and none of them have answered - either email or phone. Caseman, GigGear, Athol and Aerolyte. Its a bit frustrating. It'll be the spindle moulder jig I'll be making. You're best off with a spiral head cutter for that sort of cut. Cheaper from the UK than here.

I bought a spindle moulder on the cheap the other day, now I have to find things to do with it. I've a spiral head coming soon from the UK and a couple of tenoning heads to cut the neck joint in one pass. Should be fun.
