Re: Build 11 - "Slydebyrd"

Been a while since I built a fitted neck, so I was wondering what the next step was exactly. I figured slotting the board was a good move forward. So, stewmac fret calculator first. My first version was in inches... but then I realised I'd done all the same calcs for 624" so converting to mm gave me...

Re: Quick Spring fixer-upper

Well that explains a few things. It's a decidedly odd looking instrument. I suspected he'd shaved the top down for audience affect. The compensated frets just add to the "weird" effect. I wonder what it's actually like to play? :|

Re: Build 11 - "Slydebyrd"

My day off yesterday. Spent most of the day in the shed. Here's what I got done... http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk127/stpeterscia/Build%2011%20-%20slydebyrd/IMG20160901091001_zpssmgtoquo.jpg I've used a 36x100mm tenon for the neck joint. This gives me 10mm of timber either side for strength in...

Re: Resawing Black Heart Sassafras

Demonx is on the money here. I saved the nastiest, most warped piece of silky oak a few years back about the same thickness as your boards there. The trick is getting the resaw as even as possible and then thicknessing or drum sanding afterwards. I built this with it. http://i279.photobucket.com/alb...

Re: Build 11 - "Slydebyrd"

Thanks for that. Those numbers don't mean a lot to me. Do you think it's a mistake to use the Liquidambar? I've used it before for a bass drop top. It turned out really well. It's quite hard timber. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk127/stpeterscia/Bass%20build%2010%20-%20Liquid%20amber%2032%20fr...

Re: Build 11 - "Slydebyrd"

I pulled out my spirit level, steel rule, angle finder, bridge, fretwire and fingerboard to do some rough geometry on the neck angle. I came up with 2degs. The last time I did this I over did it and ended up with a LOT more neck angle than I should have had. Hopefully I can get it right this time. M...

Re: Build 11 - "Slydebyrd"

Hey Alex, I'll keep that in mind. I've got a bit to do before I glue the fingerboard on. Had a spare few minutes today. Was able to get the trussrod slot routed out. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk127/stpeterscia/Build%2011%20-%20slydebyrd/IMG20160829153820_zpswvhe7gqw.jpg The trussrod fit end...

Re: Build 11 - "Slydebyrd"

After trimming it with the bandsaw and hand planing a lot of timber off the top, I was able to finish it off on the jointer this morning. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk127/stpeterscia/Build%2011%20-%20slydebyrd/IMG20160827101346_zpsfejvkvsu.jpg The jointer stills scares me half to death, but ...

This is guitar I was mentioning in this thread... http://www.anzlf.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7442 I've been playing a lot of resonator slide guitar for some time. Does a laminated neck have to be symmetrical?

I'm building a neck with some scavenged liquidambar with a rather large knot in it. I decided yesterday the trick is to rip longwise and add some extra strips of timber, jarrah. What I'm wondering now is if the blank I glue up has to be symmetrical from side to side? Or, can I make up a liquorice al...

Re: What is "Hand Made"

After all, isn't part of the charm of a hand built guitar the hit or miss intonation of a hand cut fret board with nothing more to guide you than a pencil line? Are you saying all my basses are out of tune? But seriously. If you use CNC to smash out 1000 identical copies of something, then ye...

Yeah, that's the idea. I've built a number of highly chambered electrics thus far. I'm just taking that to it's logical conclusion I guess.

There's a threaded block welded into the end of the inner tube. The screws wind the inner tube up and down in the outer tube. Sorry, will have to fix the drawing to make that clearer.

Titebond, kauri pine and glue stains. Thoughts?

Ok, so I've built quite a few electric instruments now using Kauri pine. It's stable, very light and I have a never ending supply of old, well seasoned stock. However, I keep having the same issue. Wherever I laminate it together (with original titebond), I find a have a mark or stain surrounding th...
