Re: Shipping a book to Oz

Ask Stewart Macdonald who they use. I just checked my last invoices and they were all "Postal Air" and all reasonable. My most recent Amazon book delivery was under $10. I have found that bundling things together works well. Some individual items, if they are cheap to start with, end up being a litt...

Re: In Japan, wood planing can get ridiculously competitive

I'd never really thought about it until this thread. Had to actually go out and see what I was doing. Turns out I am a puller with my Laminate trimmer, Dremel and Larger router.

We had a teacher at my All Boys high school who was Mr Pullar. So unfortunate for him, so funny for us at the time.

True Jim, but when you consider that NZ was originally asked to join us in the Commonwealth of Australia it almost counts doesn't it?

Nice Work Martin, Have you got the next one on the bench :D Hi Tod, 2 on the bench at the moment. Another Blackwood small body and a Tiger Myrtle Dreadnought. Then I have another Blackwood Dreadnought ordered after that. It seems there are more people that want guitars than I imagined when I starte...

Great looking uke Kevin! How does it sound? I assume the all Blackwood approach gives a fairly crisp sound.

Re: Another Aussie tonewood guitar!

Thanks everyone for all the encouraging comments! @Markus - The bindings are 10mm x 2mm Jarrah. I try to match up the colours so thanks for noticing. @Steve - yes, it is time for a cutaway (dammit). I'll just have to get through a couple of orders first (procrastiinating a little) @Col - Let me know...

Another Aussie tonewood guitar!

Just finished a small body Acoustic. Tassie Blackwood back and sides, Bunya Pine soundboard, QLD Maple neck, Mulga Bridge and Fretboard, Paua Shell and Blackwood rosette inlay. Unfortunately for the more technically minded, I don't have any of the numbers and figures of T1s or T2s etc I'm just not t...

WOW! Awesome guitar, would love to hear it. If it sounds any where near as good as it looks it will be amazing! I love WA Sheaok. One of my favourite timbers.

Re: Sheoak guitar soundboard?

Hi Ken, I have used WA Sheoak for back and sides and agree with Kim, it is a beautiful Australian tonewood. I found it can add a little more weight to the final instrument but the benefits are plenty. Great sustain, clear tone, good volume and a look that will get lots of oohs and ahhs from onlooker...

Welcome Howard, I'm sure the admins will give you an official welcome. Once you start building you'll be addicted like the rest of us! Take plenty of photos as you build so you have a record of the process. It helps when you do your next build. And remember, its just wood, glue and a bit of hard wor...

Good vid. Relative humidity is always above 45% where I am. Workshop has been hovering around 75-80%. No glueing going on, just shaping etc.

Re: Caruth scraper

Great recommendations everyone, just placed my order. I have been using an old (late 1800's) steel butter knife that my great grandfather used to use as a utility knife. He had reduced the blade to about 1" and it has worked well, but always hurts when I use it. This looks like it will be a big impr...

Great job Nick. I've been reading up on cigar box guitars for a brother-in-law. He's really into the "recycled" ethos and these guitars ooze that. Yours looks great. Not overdone at all, just done to your high standard!

Lovely looking guitar Steve! Curious to know how you go about your cutaway, bending iron or in a jig? I am yet to do a cutaway, I know it is inevitable but still a bit freaky. I have used tassie blackwood on a couple of guitars now and it adds such a good bright tone. I haven't used a spruce soundbo...

Thanks Wayne. There are some scary videos out there! I have attached a pic of the plane. I took it apart tonight, cleaned out some old wood crud and put it back together, tightening it as I went. Did some fine shaving and it really does work like a dream. The blade has been sharpened but not in a pe...

Norris Plane

I have just been given a Norris plane. From what I can work out it is a Post War A5. Does anyone have any tips on getting it set up well? I have tested it and it cuts beautifully, but I'd like to know the best way to look after it and make sure t is setup really well. Also, I have never really sharp...
