Re: Newbie introduction
Hi Ricky Welcome, im in Auckland if that helps (but it might as well be Perth at the moment!!) Speaking purely for myself, im still making plenty of mistakes on my builds some of which are repeats which can be a bit depressing but overall its a great hobby. The finish quality will improve, for sure....

Re: Alternative String Attachment to Top Plate
HI Richard Thanks for your thoughts. Looking at it solely as a vector force, I agree with you - you could think of it as partway towards a tailpiece setup. The concern I have is in looking at it from the perspective of the string pulling directly from a point further towards the tail might cause th...

Re: Alternative String Attachment to Top Plate
Vive la difference! Interesting post. My opinion The torque on the bridge is solely dependent on the tension in the strings and their distance above the soundboard, assuming the two are more or less parallel. How the the bridge and soundboard respond to that do not change the applied torque. How muc...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)
The work progresses. Finished the bridge, 25 gramms without the saddle, but I wanted to use ebony to match the fretboard. I made it as light as I dared. Its pretty minimal. bridge.jpg Levelling and polishing frets, not my favourite job. fret job.jpg Getting there, another quick mock up another mock ...

Re: Bandsaw recommendations
Heres my two cents worth. First, i have that BS355 bandsaw, bought it 5 or 6 years ago when we moved to a house with a double garage and could set up a better workshop. Its ok. Can be very noisy with bigger blades but everything works. Ive just changed the guide bearings as the two big bottom ones h...

Re: Building a kitset dreadnought
Thanks Dave but all the credit goes to Stewmac. It comes formed perfectly to shape. It more or less lay perfectly in the rebate as it came. Made things very easy. Which is really the point of a kitset like this. I think the Stewmac kits are excellent quality and value. They're perfect for a beginner...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)
Since I parked my mates dreadnought I've been getting on with this classical. Id love to be able to change the thread title but never mind. Since I had all the binding gear out I cut the binding for this one and bent it to shape - very carefully. That went well, its a bit thinner than the dready at ...

Closing out this thread for a while now as I'm leaving the rest of it until the owner can come and do stuff. I think most of the really difficult bits are done. Re: Building a kitset dreadnought
Yesterday afternoon I cut the binding channels. One of my least favourite jobs, mainly cos of the stress involved. If things go wrong at this point it can be terminal. By this time I have always lost track of how many hours I have spent, but it will be weeks in this case. In the Stewmac kit instruct...

I reminded myself why its a good idea to tape two pieces of binding togeth...

You've got more projects on the go than I have !!
I like that parlour guitar, have to make a nylon strung one of those one day.

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)
I've ended up with FP as I find it way easier than anything else I have tried. There's no set up, no expensive kit, not much clean up. You can do a bit here and there as you are working on other things, etc etc. Also super easy to sand off and fix if you stuff up (which I frequently do). If you give...

Re: Falcate Classical #2 Build (in NZ)
A quick update. Once out of the mould and trimmed up, I sanded the top and put a few sessions of FP on it to seal it and keep it clean. Then I scraped the sides level and sanded them and the back. Sanded the back and have given everything a spit coat of FP. Have spent days with pumice and FP pore fi...

Re: Building a kitset dreadnought
moving right along.. The top goes on the sides. If you think you might like to build another guitar (or 2, or 3 or 4), consider building a go-bar deck. There are lots of plans on line, I use a shelf above the bench, its not quite wide enough but it does the job. Go bars allow you to get at the joint...

Re: Building a kitset dreadnought
Once the rosette was in it was time to start bracing but checking the top thickness I found it was 3.2 to 3.5mm. The plans say 2.5mm.So I queried it with Stewmac and they said "up to you" but leave them a bit thicker as a typical beginner fail is to oversand them. I put it through the thickness sand...

Re: New Member Introduction
Hi Daniel, welcome back. Yep things are noticeably quieter than they used to be but theres still people doing stuff so they will poke their noses in from time to time. Good to hear you have your kit and are ready to rock and roll. Making it with a 5 yo will be challenging as their attention span is ...

Building a kitset dreadnought
There may be people lurking here wondering if they could build a guitar themselves. If there are they have probably considered a kitset guitar from someone like Stewmac. I'm building one of these for a friend, so I thought Id post my thoughts and build as I go. He bought the kit with the idea with t...

Well ive already git a workshop full of part finished guitars... pretty normal state of affairs for me. The (non)falcate #2 classical moved on a notch today. First fan braces on. Felt the need to put some CF on there somewhere...the top is pretty thin so the couple of strands are shrinkage reinforci...

Have the top thicknessed. It and the bracing is currently acclimatising in my house where the humidity is a bit less. Im going to glue the bracing on in there. Since we've probably got at least another couple of weeks of lockdown so ive started a couple of other builds so i dont get bored!! Will sta...

Looks lovely in the photos. You're entitled to be as fussy as you like :) I agree it took me as long to put the finish on as it took to build the guitar, until I swapped to french polish. I find it the easiest to both apply and fix when things dont go right. Mine dont turn out with that uber-shiny "...
