Re: CITES draft proposal on rosewoods

As much as i like to get my hippie on i dont feel that blackwood needs 'extreme' (for lack of a better word) protection. The stuff is available everywhere and relatively fast growing.blackalex1952 wrote: Along with many other beautiful Australian species. Satinwood, Blackwood,

Re: 19th/20th fret on Fleta classical
If its any help. I just checked my fleta build. Full 19th spilt 20th. The 2x E strings hit the split 20th fret right in the middle.
650mm scale.
Built roughly close to the plan from the gore/gilet book.

Re: Very old tone wood
Using your figures Felix, I get the same result, But at 5 times the regular stiffness without a high density there is something happening, perhaps an interaction between modes that is preventing you measuring the fundamental frequency? It would warrant static deflection testing to confirm. I've nev...

Re: Very old tone wood
Very unlikely, recheck, Id be expecting 5-8 Gpa I rechecked a few pieces as i was going, it's correct. The one piece pictured above I rechecked again yesterday out of curiousity after cutting some more bracing from it, and yep was the same results - although at a smaller piece. Keep in mind this is...

Looks great Strato! Such a simple and solid method. Thanks for taking the time to document and share this.
I look forward to implementing in future builds.

Re: Very old tone wood
I just measured the Young's Modulus of the King billy - same piece from the end grain photo above and got: 32.98 Gpa
If i understand this correctly it is super stiff stuff.

Here's a piece of my King Billy brace material. Hard to count, but from the right side of this photo is around 33 rings for the first 10mm. the left side where its tighter and where i have cut to get my last braces is nearly impossible to count without a microscope but looks like about 4 -5 rings pe...

Re: The things that drive you nuts
Smooth over the tuner holes with a file or sandpaper. They can be rounded over quite a bit (covered by the washer). Otherwise cut circles in binding tape about 2 - 3mm larger radius then the holes and cover them. OR thirdly you can try the ear plug method (usually works well for spraying, unsure how...

Re: Engelmann/Rosewood Dread cutaway - built with the assistance of CNC
Thanks Allan. RE: the story you were told i'd think if the guitar had been traumatised so much that the bridge glue joint failed there would also be other failures having a drastic affect on the guitar that would make it almost unplayable/sound terrible - bracing is the first to come to mind. I also...

Re: Cheap laptops
Why not just use the phone/tablet app? VA only comes in Windows flavour. I've tried a bunch of sound analysis programs but they don't compare with VA for ease of use and presentation of the data. I also run Excel on my laptop. Fair enough. Worthwhile mentioning: I've compared the app on my old shed...

Re: What is "Hand Made"
I personally think everyone here needs to get back in their shed making beautiful guitars with what ever tools they use to get the job done - planes, chisels, CNC, a stone axe, or a combination of all the above.

Re: making an electric guitar shim
A few options (or a combination).
Hand plane
Hand sand - either block or with sanding board.
Powered hand held sander (small belt or orbital)
Could even do it with a chisel.

Tenor sized body, 17" scale, 14 frets to the body; Three symmetrical spruce fan braces are 4.5 mm wide X 8.0 mm high; Sorry i cant answer your question.... BUT, these fan braces seem way to large for a 4 string uke. Depending on brace and top materials there should be some serious stiffness in that...

Anymore thoughts/reviews on this stuff? Is it as 'slippery' as titebond? (My only gripe of Titebond).
