Martin conversion

As many of you may know I often convert old guitars that need major work. Here is the latest one I did on commission . This is rebuilt to 1937 specs. The guitar received a new top and neck. All bracing is located to pre war positions. The braces shaped as prewar with tucked braces and assembled with...

Re: 24" Sanding Discs

While I may sell this in the states here is a helpful hint If you can find wide belts for a thickness sander , you can cut the belt and make your own disk. A fresh utility blade cuts this well from the back.

Re: Ethical use of materials

In the USA it is ILLEGAL to reuse Ivory .There is a big difference between BWR and IVORY . Ivory comes from a living animal so this and tortoise are treated differently . I agree that it seems like a senseless law but it is there to protect the surviving animals. Besides there are better materials t...

Re: Bridge clamp

That is actually an old and true design , but to make it even better, you use 3/8 heavy silicone padding under the bridge area , then you can get toggle pads at most home depots or lowes , the toggle pads are great for working the wings. Also you may want to make a inner cawl so you don't over stres...

Re: Binding tape ruining my top

One of the best tapes I found was 3M 233. It is a stretchy tape. Also no matter what tape you use , if you don't seal the top then start in the area under the fretboard and you can read the fiber direction. Then pull the tape off in that direction and you will be fine.

Re: Scale length - does it really affect sound?

Yes scale length will indeed influence the voice of the guitar. Capoing won't simulate that change really. The difference is that a longer scale will need more tension to tune to pitch. This allows more energy to be converted to work. It is all about Physics. I like longer scales for lead picking an...

#152 out the door

This is my 152 guitar. I swapped this for an organ that my Grandmother played in church. Maple , pre war spec hot hide glue and surprising how bassey this maple sounds. Red spruce top. A touch of toner in the nitro to pop the grain.

Re: 1975 Martin D28

Often , if a neck reset was done the frets #14-15-16 tend to get pushed up a bit from the steam 15 being removed then replaced. I don't know about you but I seldom play that far up. If you have to redo those frets it isn't a big deal at all.

Anything that allows you to share your time and knowledge with your children is more than a guitar , it is about a heritage. Enjoy the time together , it will be gone faster than you know. Cherish this time of sharing.

Re: Are Guitarists getting smarter?

I have been building for 14 years and I now have a back log on orders. I think the buyers are more particular and are finding the production made instruments to sterile . Quality of tone is now replaced with warranty issues and cost of production. We as builders still like to make what we make the w...

Re: Fret leveling question

I am speaking of the fret tang . If you have too large a tang you will exert a good bit of force on the top. I also use fish glue as a filling agent when I fret. You want that fret board as flat and true as possible. If your tang pushes on the end grain in the slot it can cause the fret board to dip...

You want the bottom of the nut slot to be about .007 above the plane of the top off the frets.

Re: Fret leveling question

Taking fretting to the next level , I used to do it the way lots of you described. I took my playability to the next level when I started doing this. 1 Set neck and plane fretboard. 2 Fret neck. use a smaller tang fret at the fret board extension 3 level and dress frets. What this does , is allow to...

Re: Outside mould and stretchers

what you do put into a guitar has to come out. take a piece of anything to simulate the top and make a hole in that , the same size as the hole you plan to use. If it don't come out make the spreader a little smaller. Yes a spreader is wood and I put foam on the mate surface . It isn't that difficul...

Re: Outside mould and stretchers

Just remember what goes in gotta come out. I use a turn buckle and then to be sure they come out cut a hole the same size as your sound hole you plane to use. I use 1 spreader on the waste and a 1/2 inch down on the neck and tail block. Then I can reach in and cut the down and pull the spreader. My ...
