Well there seems to have been a bit of discussion with some proffering some other alternatives. I guess that is the beauty of the forum! In a nut nut shell I was only offering one approach that might be of use in the absence of calculators etc. Of course this approach does require two existing scale...

Scale length approaches

Occasionally I get requests for fingerboards with unusual scales. Most recently a 27" scale. As I use the LMI templates with my power saw I needed a simple way to redraw all the fret positions with a new scale length. So after pondering the puzzle for a while it occurred to me that if I align two ex...

Drum sanders

Hi all, I am on my two week break from the classroom so I thought I would chip in! A lot of the drum sanders are pretty similar at the entry level. There is some variation in components and it would be prudent to ask the shop where you are buying it from if they have parts on hand or able to source ...

Perhaps the issue here is determining what are the necessary features or characteristics for a good neck. When all is done and dusted you are dealing with shaped neck, fretboard, tuners and the counterwieght of the body. So what is a desireable weight? While stability and workability are the provenc...

Dominic, I have no problem with the discussion. It is good to get everything clarified. I also think the issue of provenance and sustainability is increasingly becoming an issue in the selection of timbers. I am not up to date with timber resource projections for the Solomon Islands however Brian Ch...

Hi Guys, Just a summary post regarding Australian Tonewoods and Sitco Australia in the harvesting and importation of Xanthostenum Melanoxylon. The harvesting of this timber is not a "logging" operation. It is a low impact process involving minimal mechanisation (chainsaws), controlled and carried ou...

Hi Guys, Please note that the material sourced from the Solomon Islands through SITCO Australia is purchased by Brian Christie (a Solomon Islander) from the local community who selectively harvest individual trees. All purchasing and export to Australia is done under Solomon Island government licenc...

Hi Mark, I thought I would add a comment regarding Red Spruce (Adirondack) . In my limited experience red spruce grain count per inch is less critical given its superior strength. Some builders in fact look for wide even grain rather than the fine grain associated with master grade sets. regards Tim

I have been thinking through this jig for a while and have nearly solved the process. I thought you may have some interest so here are the images. I have listed a range of timber that could be used for fretboards. Whilst the density of the some of the timbers listed appears to be less desirable for a steel string instruments they work well for ukes, weissenborns and resonators. Player technique also has a lot do do with fretboard wear. regards...

Nice job on the guitar Jeff. I am very interetsed to see how you go with the celery top pine for the neck. I have several large baords of Cewlery Top Pine that I was going to convert into neck myself.
