Re: Leveling frets

Sorry matt, I dis-agree. I think the setting up of the neck to replicate a strung up instrument is so over rated. I have the gear and I used to do it that way because the experts overseas swore by it. String it up, dial in the indicators , unstring it, twist and troque the head to replicate tension ...

Re: Leveling frets

As Rod said's, get the neck straight with the use of the truss rod for fret levelling, you only wind the truss rod completley loose if your going to re-profile the board again, any warpage at this point, I bend the neck with presses to get rid off.

Re: Archtop refret

I use a jig that clamps onto the neck just past the heel and extends a standard fret pressing tool over the area of concern, then just press in as per normal, pretty sure stewmac has a similiar device

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs

The cnc has a built in vacuum bed, I just dont use it. It runs on three phase and is about 6500 watts of suction power. This clamping power Ive found to be unneccasary as double sided tape works pretty good for holding things still

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs

Thanks for everyones responses, Im stunned by the information out there on vacuum clamping, and Ive never in 20 years given it a thought. LMI even have the nifty guitar stand that works via vacuum as well. Certainly would make it easier when doing touch up buffing, currently I sit a guitar on the ru...

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs

Thanks kim, I actually read the whole 3 pages the first time you linked it up, but I had no understanding or concept of vacuum clamping so it was humbo jumbo, that being said I just reread the whole three pages again, Im still kind of am guessing the extra tanks are not necessary but are advisable, ...

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs

Okay, Ive been doing some reading and research, so now I have a few questions. If you purchase a vacuum pump, why do you need cylinders to be attached, or are they being used as a header tank for vacuum, would not just the vacuum pump by itself work fine. Has anyone that uses this vacuum method made...

Re: Which Multipurpose tool: Dremel?

The absolute smallest size unit I would use for a pickup cavity is a 1/4" trimming router, under that is just no good, the dremel is a great little tool for inlaying / saddle slotting and so forth, but nothing more demanding than that. I purchased the dremel multi tool that supposedly sands routes a...

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs

Very interested in links to purchase a vacuum generator or instructions to make a basic one. I went down the path of buying LMI's convertor unit for compressor to vacuum, so Ill be able to use all there gear straight away, but from the out pooring thumbs up for this, I guess Im going to move into th...

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs

Wow, it's more commonly in use than I had anticipated, placed an order just then for the unit, definetly look forward to giving it a go. I understand that it pulls the top up and the bridge down, but I would not have envisioned it being better than having a clamp on the bridge and a caul underneath....

Re: Anyone used vacuum jigs

That would be greatly appreciated, Ive never ever used vacuum for guitar work, so this is a whole new field for me of which I have zero knowledge, the downside I can see so far is you cannot visually confirm that the bridge is in the right spot whilst it is under vacuum, also you need to be running ...

Anyone used vacuum jigs

Hey folks, just a simple question, Im old school, glues / clamps / cauls etc, Was browsing LMI's stuff becuase I need some more heat blankets, but I noticed there range of clamping sets that work via vacuum, apparently you can fit an acoustic bridge and string it up 40 minutes later due to the fact ...

Re: Sunburst finish.

Difficult, but not impossible. Seal the body with a coat or two of lacquer, Mix the stains into the additional lacquer coats, The difficulty will be - "not using a spray gun", if you can mix the right ratio of thinners to allow you to rub the lacquer onto the surface without it tacking off on you, y...

Dont know, havent had a chance to use it today, Ideally Ill just do it to size, and then see how much finishing up is required. If it needs a lot then Ill do another one but oversized fractionally.

Re: cyclone shopvac dust kits

There not cheap are they, for the price they are after Id be wanting a negative pressure unit.
Ive toyed with dust extraction a plenty, I think the best dust free situation is achieveed simply when you move the collection bag/filter outside your workshop. Then its not an issue.

Re: Duplicator arrives next week

Cost was 1350 plus 375 USD delivery, for some reason it also went through customs without getting hit by GST, so that was a bit surprising, could be becuase it came as two seperate packages. The saw dust for the photo shoot was acquired from local pet store. :D Its definetly over priced for what it ...

And yes I deliberatly left the bench space dirty. :) Only down side I can see, is that im right ha...
