Re: Ambrosia Maple and Ancient Spruce Tenor

Wow, that's a piece of crazy looking wood, I absolutely love it (how not).
And the usual neat workmanship.

How are you doing the inevitable "pore" filling? Epoxy?

Dust-free thicknessing machine

Nothing new under the sun, but I think this is not yet in the ANZLF's jig collection (or I haven't seen it). The title is a bit exaggerated, but in any case dust production is quite a bit less than when using a drum sander. It is similar to planing a piece in a groove, but the setup is much quicker ...

Re: 16 inch Florentine archtop.

Nice work as always Rod! :) also i'll just add that KBP isn't one of the best timbers i've seen for scraping!! I never have worked with, or even touched King Billy Pine, but for scraping any conifer wood I prefer very thin scrapers, more precisely these French scrapers which - quite oddly regarding ...

Re: Myrtle Tenor

That's one little great looking guitar Peter! :cl Glad to read it sounds great as well. To leave the bridge in its original place while altering maybe the whole rest of measurements would have been my choice too. I think "opening up" has more to do with the natural release of built-in tensions than ...

Re: My First Build: A Cypress Archtop!

That's a very nice guitar, just don't tell you wanted to have it look differently! 8) It looks a bit like a very old guitar in pristine condition. I'm not at all an expert on archtops, but other than (for my taste) a bit a brisk re-curve I can't see many flaws, if any at all. I never have made an ar...

Re: Something a bit different, a "Space Scene" SS6

This fretboard must have been a lot of work! Beautiful wood with nicely contrasting colours too. Well done, congrats.

I guess your customer is now renaming musical notes to planet names and so. For example, d# would be "Saturn ring's lower right seen in current astronaut's perspective".

Re: An Australian Luthier in Paris

found a luthier shop. Unfortunately it was closed but I knew Nick Oliver would be interested as there were half a dozen Maccas (grande and petit Bouche) in there as well as what looked like a 1920's National steel and several ancient Gibson Mandolins as well as some very old Martins. It looks like ...

I have done the repair. The minor dings are now invisible and the big ding is almost invisible. Thanks for all the advice. As a non-newzealander I had to listen to this twice:

"We don't want a 500 year old Kauri to be cut down for a [...]"
...for a what??? Ah, for a deck. But of course she is right in any case!

I'll stick with my theory that they originate from a luthier who peeled a tangerine or two this way.

Interesting paper though (the real link is this one).

the examples he gave are terrible. A matter of taste and tradition. what music uses this? Some traditional oriental music uses radif and other non-western scales. http://www.luth.org/images/backissues/al101-104/al102_shirazi.jpg I am not an expert on this, but I believe (without having had the pati...

I've read the rules for this forum and I know plugging your own wares is frown on but since no one in Aus or NZ has purchased one previously (sold only to US) no one is going to be on here to recommend them . . . so it's a bit of a chicken and egg scenario - so I apologies if I am breaking/bending ...
