repair to thin plastic binding
Here's a question for the repair gurus I have been asked to glue on a piece of white plastic binding about 75mm long that has fallen off the side of an Ovation neck,, between the third and fifth fret markers. The only time I have used this kind of binding material was on a Stewmac kit build and I us...

Bon Anniversaire Christophe Grellier!
According the "other" forum, its Christophe Grellier's birthday today - just in case he ever drops in I'd like to say Bon Anniversaire and merci beaucoup for the great guitar plans available from his (very nice) website. I have used them for several guitars and they look great on the wall too. If yo...

Re: Workshop tour - lets see yours!
Allan, I think you can take it from the number of responses to your post that you probably have the biggest workshop on the forum! Mine would fit in there about 25 times. If you search the back catalogue of the forum there are a few workshop threads, its always interesting to see what other people d...

Re: Falcate braced classical
Martin, can I ask about the way the sides are joined to the spanish heel - I havent seen that before. Are you going to put wedges in the final joint or are they temporary?
I like the bindings - they look very neat and tidy - I'm going to try them on my next one.
Cheers

Re: Going electric
Hi Paul You have an online supplier of pickups and bits very close to you - http://www.guitarparts.co.nz They do a range of pickups - obviously they import them and you are paying the postage but there are some economies and they have stock close at hand. I have bought a fair bit from them and the s...

Well done Allen, must be quite a buzz to feel the collective excitement of the class as they see their instruments come to life in so short a time.

Re: FYI....White pencils
Hi Nick You have a Gordon Harris store in your fair city, at 34 Southwark Street, Christchurch 8011. I havent been in that one, but I would hazard a guess that you will find all sorts of white pencils (pretty sure I have seen them sold individually) in there plus many other wonderful goodies that yo...

Once again, great ukes Alan - truly spectacular - one of these years I'm coming over to take one of your uke courses. Speaking personally, I'd take being considered average on this forum as a compliment! And Nick, engineers can do anything.... but they are especially good at eating pizza and :gui (c...

Re: Advice needed: classical bridge string holes poorly dril
When it comes to making guitars, I consider myself a beginner but making mistakes with bits of wood, well thats different, in that I am an expert. So you wont be surprised to hear I have done a similar thing too. Happily it was not so bad that I needed to remake the (figured blackwood) bridge on my ...

Gib adjustment on jointers
Anyone got one of these (generic taiwanese 6 inch jointer) AND still have the owners manual? I bought this at the weekend 2/h and the outfeed table is both misaligned and loose. 218456557_full.jpg I understand the gib screws need adjusting and tightening but as all websites with info on the process ...

Jeremy Thats 20 minutes of my life put to very good use - just watched a few vids of your guitars on you tube, they sound fantastic, even through my crappy PC speakers, so they are probably even more amazing in the flesh. What I really like about your guitars is the bold and completely individual lo...

Re: Utile guitar?
Hi Peter From a relative newbie.. I agree with Allen, most of the planers I have seen have a minimum thickness of about 3 to 5mm and you will be taking a risk - depends how cheap your wood is.. If it has bottom rollers and top rollers, then the wood will bend and the ends will catch - with possible ...

Re: Finally. . . #1 finished
That looks great Wayne
I really like the clean lines and big shape.
I would expect that to sound very nice and get better with playing.
The finish looks great too - what did you use?
One to be proud of, nothing quite like the first one! (until you finish the next one of course)
Cheers

Re: Compensating for nutcases
The nut to first fret distance is typically something like 35mm and that is equivalent to a semitone pitch change, (100 cents pitch change). If you move the nut toward the first fret by, say, 1.0mm, you'll get ~3 cents pitch rise (100/35). If you then drop tune the open string 3 cents back to conce...

I freely admit to not studying this at all and have not read Trevors no doubt excellent book, so I guess I am leaving myself open to being told I am asking a dumb question, but before I do spend a lot of time trying to understand nut compensation.... What happens on a nut compensated guitar when you...
