Re: Some news + designing a dream workshop?

I would aim for something a bit softer than concrete on the floor. Both for your feet and the dropped chisels! Agree. A slightly raised ply floor is much kinder on both feet and chisels and allows easy (re) routing of electrical cables under the floor to tools anywhere in the shop. Sounds like a gr...

No builds, but umm, chaos on the repair front
If that photo is any indication of your workshop, I would suggest you have a lot to learn about chaos.
I am happy to give suggestions based on my own experience. :)

In the 70's or 80's I read that John Williams used 5 minute Araldite to rebuild torn nails. I suppose it all depends what technology is available to you at the time.

Very cool. Takes me back to the 1980's when there were a number of very talented groups playing Medieval and Renaissance music in NZ.

Re: Fretted to Fretless Conversion

I've had plenty of success with cheap, supermarket superglue And also with $2 Shop superglue. The biggest difference I've noted is that the unused $2 Shop stuff is unusable next day. Perhaps more to do with the airtightness of the container than the quality of the contents? However, I always use th...

Re: New Listings @ Australian Guitar Tonewood!

Requested some tiger myrtle from Jeremy. He sought out a suitable B&S set that met my specifications. Timed posting the wood to coincide with my visit to Brisbane and kept me informed every step of the way. You could not ask for a better product or better service. Thoroughly recommended.

A fine looking beast. That must have taken some carving. I'm surprised that having made one archtop, anyone would go back and want to do it again.

Re: The Lazarus Bass Ukulele

Thanks for the comments. It's great to get feedback. Attached picture shows a reconstruction of the soundboard with braces attached. The Norman Gunston look with bits of paper still attached is because I glued all the toothpicks to a sheet of light card to get them aligned. The other side is a lot w...

Re: Sweet deal

I'm quite surprised that builders exploring advanced concepts such as node and antinode shapes of Chladni patterns are persisting with the archaic notion of physical soundholes. I am convinced the future lies in digital soundholes. They take no space, they can be emailed from Europe or China in seco...

Re: help identifying wood.

Kauri is very stable once it's dry. Most of NZ's early houses were made of made of kauri. Not sure if the stiffness to weight ratio would make it ideal for bracing. Only one way to find out.

The Lazarus Bass Ukulele

A friend of mine was unfortunate enough to have his Kala UBass run over by a 4WD. Fortunately it was in one of those nylon covered foam polystyrene cases. Unfortunately those NCFPC aren't designed to withstand 4WDs. Result: a collection of mahogany toothpicks with a few bits hanging off them. I acqu...

Re: Where can you buy ebony

I got about 2m of 100*100 Solomon Islands ebony from a sawmill in Mt Roskill a few years ago. It's nice and black with a few brown streaks. Hard as the hobs of Hell, weighs a ton. Think I paid about $100. Don't know the address but it's about number 20 Carr Rd down a driveway. He had industrial quan...

Re: Please help !!!

What is it about crowd-funding in lutherie that you don't agree with?
Most entrepreneurial businesses get startup funding from "friends, fools and family" - the 3 F's.
If you want to help fund a startup, you've just got to decide which category you fit into.
