Re: "The Shed" guitar
Thanks to all who participated in this – greatly appreciated. First, a few more details about the guitars: Both are falcate braced. Both have live backs The bridges are near identical; consecutive slices off the block, same mass (11.5 grams) The strings are the same; Savarez 540J (High tension, “car...

Re: Bunya/Blackwood OM
Amazing effort! Takes a lot of "bottle" (as we used to say in the olde country) to use a top like that. Regarding bunya's properties, Bootle gives its Young's Modulus as 13GPa, but I've never found any that stiff, more like 9-10GPa. It varies a lot in density too (not unusual), ~450kg/m^3 to ~540Kg/...

Re: "The Shed" guitar
Thanks Paul. There's no wrong answers here. What you hear is what you hear! One of my early learnings was that there doesn't seem to be any such thing as "normal" hearing; another of the things that makes this game so hard (and so interesting...!)

Re: "The Shed" guitar
Thanks to Kim for the YouTube tips and thanks everyone who's had a go answering the question... Now here's a puzzle for you: The recordings were made with more-or-less identical settings; no EQ, no reverb, nuthin'. The guitars have soundboards that are as identical as two soundboards can get, same b...

Trevor, whatever you've done with the outline it looks really nice and less angular than my Hausers. Thanks! Yeh, you can mess with guitar outlines ad infinitum . I use Jon Sevy's great little app. for doing body shapes. Really easy to use... http://gicl.cs.drexel.edu/people/sevy/luthierie/software...

Re: red pine
Could be Oregon pine. Plenty of that came in, too. If it's really brittle, likely sequoia; if tougher with a stronger, pine-like aroma, likely Oregon. Either way, you'd want it to be pretty well quarter sawn, or at least sufficient width on the quarter to make a multiple-piece top. If it rings reall...

Sorry Dom, should have said. I'm using a Shure PG57 dynamic mic these days, not too expensive. My old Sennheiser died. I plug it straight into the mic input on my Tosh. Tecra M5 and use the mic boost.

So its just a slightly wider lower bout? About 380mm? 365mm lower bout. Full and fruity without being too blobby, like your 25 year old girlfriend. How did you know I have a 25 yr old girl friend? Are those pics from a GAL conference or something? How were your guitars received? Healdsburg, 2009. T...

Re: Intonation & Resonance Shifting Example
Hi Craig, What I can’t work out is how this ‘over-coupling’ has occurred. What am I missing :? For one who's "not the sharpest tool in your shed" you don't miss much! There's a bit of back story behind this guitar which might help make things clearer. This guitar was an "old favourite" of a customer...

Re: "The Shed" guitar
What shape is it? It's my "classical" classical shape (as opposed to my neo-classical shape). We only got a few shots of your guitars in the book so it good to see another one. Here's the same shape in more normal surroundings: CL_R.jpg CL_B.jpg And here's a fairly typical SS with some good ol' blo...

Re: Blackwood L-00 analysis
Good stuff Dom! I sanded the tool marks from the braces inside and went back and tested and got the green line, 97, 193, 235 Sure it wasn't the purple line? That's a pretty noisy looking trace, BTW. Is that direct into your computer's built in mic? (or even a phone app.?), then Excel? Mine routinely...

Re: Attempting a re fret.
The best way to get good at fret jobs is lots of practice... The place to start: do a fret dress on this guitar because, like others, I think that'll be all you need. If it's not, well, you've had some good practice! You don't have to get all the divots completely out. They generally look much worse...

Re: "The Shed" guitar
Thanks for the kind words everyone. I can't help thinking about bananas in pyjamas every time I see this guitar. Would it be possible to get a sound recording soon? I was hoping to do some recording today, but got caught up mixing down other stuff. What was interesting though, is that I heard the gu...

Re: Specific vs Monopole mobility ?
I've mostly done it with strings on. On the deflection test, the principles of linear elastic structures and superposition apply, so it doesn't matter. On the tap test I get pretty much the same result, strings on to strings off. You need the saddle in because of the mass and the strings add a bit o...

"The Shed" guitar
When I moved into "The Shed" about 12 years ago I did the usual reno's and removed a fair amount of wood from the place. A lot of it I kept around, thinking some day it would be nice to make a guitar out of the bits. Then came "the book" and the "Wood for Guitars" paper for the ASA, then Lacey then ...

Re: Behringer Acoustic Amp ACX1800
Well, I was wrong! The power amp stage is twin channel, just both fed with the same input so it works like mono. And one of the reasons acoustic amps never sound real good...the standard speakers don't push out much over 5kHz even if the amp runs up to 20kHz. Can anyone recommend a compact full rang...

Re: Behringer Acoustic Amp ACX1800
Here's a couple more things about this amp... I have a mate with one; its speakers are wired out of phase too. That suggests it either intentional or totally random! It's a two channel amp, one channel intended for instrument (guitar), one for a mic. Different frequency responses on each. The instru...

Trevor, ... would'nt you be better off useing a PA Rather than an Acoustic amp that usually have circuits that shape the tone ? Hi Tod. Yes, if it was just about performing. But any circuit shapes the tone, whether intentionally or not. What this thing is about is a bit of a project to figure out w...

Re: Behringer Acoustic Amp ACX1800
Thanks, Kim. This thing is assembled almost like a rack mount unit (wish it was!), with the whole amp chassis just slid in like a drawer above the speaker enclosure. It is held in with 3 screws each side...and something else! There's nothing going up from the speaker enclosure into the base of the a...
