Hi Folks,
I've started a couple of tear-drop mountain dulcimers I have plans but I'm keen to add arches to the underside of the fret boards. Are there any guidelines/measurements or positioning rules for this?
Cheers - Pat

Re: bridge repair hobart
Hi Matthew,
I'm not aware of anyone having repair jobs with this Hobart luthier - but he had some very nice instruments on display at the Cygnet festival last weekend. His website has a mobile number at the bottom of the gallery

Pick Guard material
Hi Folks, I need to make a pick guard - tiger myrtle preferred for matching. I have been given some lovely veneer but its less that 1mm thick - probably around 0.7mm. Would this be suitable? Secondly....... the top is finished with Danish Oil. One recommendation to secure the pick guard was to use d...

Re: Ukelele bridge support
The bracing would be .....(theoretically) three Tas blackwood fan braces from the cross brace to just short of the very back.
Does this improve the odds?
Thanks for the replies.

Ukelele bridge support
Hi Folks, Just a hypothetical question ...............:) If a person forgot to glue in the bridge plate on a tenor uke, then realised after the bodies (yes - Plural) were sealed what would be the consequences? One is a Huon Pine soundboard and the other is a King Billy. Hypothetically - that is. Che...

What finish to use:
Hi Folks, Getting close to completing my first build (it's now fret time) and starting to wonder about the finish. As a beginner, Danish oil sounds easy - but I wonder about oil filling up that soundboard? Does it have an effect? Should I have a go at some spray system? It's tiger myrtle back and si...

Another neck question
Thank you the great advice on neck fitting.
(Progress is slow but good, I think I'm gonna make it)!
Now to test your patience........
If I have an angle on the neck, how can the fretboard glue on top of it then change direction to glue onto the soundboard?
Cheers

First neck joint
Hi Folks, Just cut my first dovetail neck joint (using the StewMac templates). It has gone ok but..................... The neck is only about 2mm proud of the sound board and I suspect that the tenon has bottomed out as there's a slight wobble in the joint - not a pinch. So my problem is..... If I t...

Re: Fingerboard thickness
Thanks Allen (A lesson there)
Its a steel string (6) guitar
45mm at the nut and 55 at the 14th fret (scale 25.4)
I think that makes it typical.
(If there is such a thing)?
Cheers

Fingerboard thickness
Hi Folks,
Just preparing my first neck.
I have cut in the fret slots on the finger board and am about to sand to 12" radius.
Before I do though, what starting thickness should my finger board blank be?
Cheers

Binding glue
Hi Folks,
Just glued the soundboard down on my first build - how exciting it all is!!!!!!
Just looking ahead - I have some binding that I bought, they're plastic I believe - but I like the creamy colour.
Will Titebond hold them in place?
Or do I need something like CA glue?
Cheers

Re: Nut files
Hi Allen,
Thanks for the response.
Found them displayed here:

There's only three in the set.
I don't doubt your advice but how do you apply them to six strings?
Cheers

Nut files
Hi folks,
Making slow but steady progress on my first guitar.
It's a steel string acoustic if that helps?
There are so many nut files it's confusing.
What should I get as a starting set?
Cheers

Bridge position
Hi Folks, Thank you for the great replies on Nut Placement and 14th fret position. I'm now want to mark up my sound board with its bridge position and bracing. I appreciate that the saddle is skewed, but how do I mark it out? Do I measure from the 14th fret? What are the distances? Scale length is 2...

Hi Folks, Just wanted to support Kim's "Men's Shed" suggestion. My workshop is tiny - but I'm a member of the local Woodcraft Guild. (Women and Family friendly). It's a great social connection as well as giving me access to all the machinery. ($40/yr membership + $2/hr). Another benefit is that it h...

Nut placement
Hi Folks, Just about to measure and mark up my neck. The instructional video shows the fret0 line to be right on the join between the straight length of the neck and the angled peg head.... But that means the nut will be placed on the angled peg head and require a channel to be cut out to square it ...

Back bracing
Hi Folks, In a moment of excitement (first guitar) I glued the back on and forgot to shape the front braces up into a peak. The top's not on yet. Should I make an effort to shape the braces somehow or perhaps it really doesn't mater too much? Not sure of the implications ..... if any? Cheers - a muc...

Beginner - Neck length question
Hi folks, just started my first acoustic guitar.
I'm ready to glue the neck block on but not sure where to mark the 14fret.
I'm getting conflicting information on the neck length from nut to 14th fret.
Is it 360mm, 359mm or 357 or other?
Scale length is 25.4
Cheers
