Re: Tap Test after Closing Box
In order to get a decent plot I needed to cover the disk side of my laptop with two pillows, turn off the fluorescent lights (which was a lot; I don't use incandescents unless I have to), and put my mike in the middle of a pile of pillows, with an open area pointing at the guitar. As you can see fr...

Re: Tap Test after Closing Box
Trevor, As suggested, I attached the almost complete bridge with double stick tape and retested. The bridge was complete except for tapering the thickness at the back edge so I figured that the mass of the wood not yet removed in the tapering would be about equivalent to the mass of the 12 bridge pi...

Re: Tap Test after Closing Box
Trevor, Your were completely correct. I hadn't checked the microphone input level. It was way too high. How stupid of me. I also had the microphone (a Shure SM58) sitting on the computer deck feeding in the computer fan vibrations. I guess if you're feeding the sound signal directly into VA only, wi...

Tap Test after Closing Box
Hi there, I am on my first steel string acoustic build using "the books". It is a 12 string with the shape of a Martin D28-12, a non-live back and top bracing similar to the J45 in the book. The X-braces and sound hole braces have been beefed up for the additional force from the 12 strings. I am at ...

Scalloping Braces
Here's a really simple one relating to scalloping and trimming the outer ends of braces in an X braced top. 11.2.2.9 of Volume 2 talks about marking and trimming the braces 10mm inboard of the guitar outline . Drawing 1 shows the braces trimmed 10mm inside (at the nearest point) of what I assume is ...

Soulman,
I'm about to put together a go bar deck and like yours. What wood did you use for your go bars and what size were they? What was the height of the top deck?

Re: Timber for Guitar Making Jigs
OK Plywood sounds good. What would you use for thicker pieces (>30mm) eg for cauls to glue fretboards, radiused sanding blocks etc.

Timber for Guitar Making Jigs
I'm fairly new to building acoustic guitars (although I have built a small number of electrics) and I am in the process of constructing the various jigs, cauls etc that are required, many of which will be made from hardwood. I am seeking opinions on the most suitable type of hardwood (available in A...

Re: .070" (1.78mm) Bearing for Weiss binding
I've also used tape on the router bit bearing to change the diameter and it worked well. I read somewhere that aluminium (aluminum) tape was good for this purpose (maybe that is what Stewmac have) and I tracked some down on ebay from a US supplier - a few strips for a few $. The next weekend, Aldi w...

Re: Radius sanding blocks
Availability of Safe-T-Planer When I found out that Stewmac no longer supply the Safe-T-Planer I bought a clone from McJing in Yagoona in Sydney. I have only done a trial cut and it seemed to work OK although I have never seen an original one in use so I can't compare. The cutters on the McJing are ...
