Re: New to the group and guitar building
Back is on, bridge is on and preamp is installed, will do the binding next and give the bridge some time to rest before stringing it up to set the saddle location. The nut is on, only rough shaped will need lowering yet. 9E44C591-EA63-4E0E-95D2-DE6D369E9ED4.jpeg 6F7ECFFF-AFB5-44C8-92EB-E3C4834EB5F0....

Re: More on dust extraction
ok, here are some images of my setup, in no particular order. the only machine I don't have with 150mm ducting is the bandsaw, its not exactly mine so I am not going to cut it open to the 150mm duct size. since I took these pictures I have added a large bell mouth hood the the belt sander. Re: More on dust extraction
Hi Pat, Probably the first thing to consider in installing a dust extractor is where it will be located, inside a shed is not an ideal location as you will be breathing in all the dust that the extractor is unable to contain. I have mine located outside the shed in its own shed and the duct runs thr...

Re: How big a drumsander?
You’re welcome Martin. The main instigator about dust on the woodwork forum is BobL, he is a living encyclopaedia on the subject and takes it very seriously. He has taught me all I know about dust and it’s dangers, it really is a subject that should not be pushed aside for anyone working in a dust c...

Re: How big a drumsander?
No intention of opening a can of worms on dust extraction but have a look at the woodwork forum, information is good for your lungs. http://www.woodworkforums.com/f200
I use a 3hp unit with 150mm ducting, it really is the minimum that will keep you healthy.

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Thanks Martin, will get to it on the weekend and see what I come up with. As for the bridge patch, I guess i am being over cautious this time round as the last one was under done. I have to learn to get the balance right

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Some more pondering with this, sorry to trouble you all. With my last attempt at a guitar I ended up putting a tailpiece on to it due to my lack of knowledge (bridge lifted) I seem to notice quite a difference in volume with the tailpiece v’s without? With this build only having the f hole and nylon...

Re: New to the group and guitar building
I think I just have to bite the bullet and glue the bridge on prior to the back going on then cut the saddle slot, I don’t see any other alternative really. My normal method with anything I do is freak out and over think things then calm down and do it, it ends up not being as big of a deal as I fir...

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Ok, fretboard is glued to the neck. I still haven’t sorted the frets out yet, will do that shortly. Still worried about the bridge and cutting the saddle slot after it is all glued on. I fully understand that it is the only way to go though. If the scale length was that of a soprano or tenor, it pro...

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Just to add to my difficulty level I forgot about the fact that this will have an under saddle piezo in it so I can’t close the back up until the bridge is on and saddle slot cut otherwise I can’t connect and route the wire for the piezo. I guess I can get the saddle slot in the right place still wi...

Re: New to the group and guitar building
That has just become an agh hah moment for me! That looks doable with the gear I have aside from the bit you are using, is it a dremmel branded bit or another brand? What size is the bit please. Thanks for your help with this too! Cheers Cal

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Hmm, I can see myself making a dogs breakfast of it. What method would you use to create the slot? I have a dremmel with a home made aluminium router base and a makita laminate trimmer, which would be the pick to use and is there a 3mm bit available for either of them? I have used the table saw to c...

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Thanks Wayne and Steve for your input. No vacuum clamp, to be honest I don’t even know what one looks like
What do you think of my method of fitting the bridge before I glue the back on? Do either of you see any issues arising from it? Cheers Cal

Re: New to the group and guitar building
The bridge will have to go on prior to closing the back up, I have no other way of clamping it otherwise. Which means I have to start the binding channel for the back at the neck before I glue the neck on. I know it’s all a bit arse about but it’s all I can do without a sound hole.

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Point taken, makes a lot of sense to add another layer or two to them. I will have to sort out where to store them when not in use, ideally laying flat rather than on end. MDF has a mind of its own!

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Ok, let’s see if these are up the right way, added kerfing and bracing to both lots of sides. I am now struggling with the thought of how best to do set up the soundboard and backs for these, do I leave them flat or will I need to add radius to them? I need to work out what the neck angle will be an...

Thanks for that Col, they were taken with the iPhone and transferred to the iPad. No third party apps involved, but I have not been tempted to update either device l...

Re: New to the group and guitar building
Well that has got me stumped how the images ended up the wrong way up, I just viewed the thread on the computer and they are up the wrong way as you say (not that I didn’t believe you) I can’t see a way to edit the post myself (is it due to being new to the forum or is that not something that can be...
