Re: Paul Call bandsaw restoration project.

I just got the saw. The tires look fine. No play in the bearings. The blade runs smoothly through the guides. I took the motor off and put a new plug and chord on it and it runs great now! There is a brand new belt too. The motor seems to haves a bit of grunt , and it ways a ton too. Plus it seemed ...

Re: WAS now rampant. Woodrat implicated!

Hi Martyn, The Cherry Myrtle would be Tassie Myrtle I believe although it could be South American or Chilean Cherry which is related to Tassie Myrtle and is a Nothofagus too. There was a bit of it around years ago. I though that it would all have vanished from the racks of places like that. What is...

Re: Tassie Blackwood neck

Martyn, if you have a thick enough piece of flatsawn stock you can rip it and turn it at 90 degrees and rejoin it and it will be quartersawn when you join it together again in the new orientation. If the piece is dead flatsawn (and out of a very big tree) it will become dead quartersawn. Thats a ni...

Re: WAS now rampant. Woodrat implicated!

As soon as my package of ukulele sets arrived from Woodrat it started. I was craving as I walked 200m up my driveway, even before I opened the package. When I cast my eyes over the contents the feelings just intensified. It has grown steadily, more severe each day. The reason I know it is the Woodr...

Re: Tassie Blackwood neck

I use it for necks on ukes and haven't seen any issues with it there. There's lot's of variation in it's density and workability on pieces that I've used, or the students building with blackwood in my classes have used. It's a fair bit more work to shape and sand than mahogany for example. Does it ...

I am surrounded by trees... Mostly in National Parks unfortunately . I'm too old and impatient to wait for them to dry. It's a blessing and a curse. I disagree. It's only a blessing . No one shall suffer from WAS but ENJOY it! :D You're on the good track, Martyn. Now you're sorting through the timber planks of a local dealer and looking longingly at quartersawn doors and furniture, tomorrow you'll want to cut down t...

"The reason I know it is the Woodrat strain is because I have no shame, or, will to resist." Yep That Woodrat is a carrier alright, Im sure that's where I caught it also,I think he should be Quarantined. I'm afraid that there is no cure, but the symptoms can be treated by building a buitifull Uke :D...

Re: HELP! Petrol spill on my NGRW

Hi Martyn, I shouldnt worry too much about it, most of it should have evaporated away and any residue should be sent flying as you mill/saw/sand it. At 29mm thick I expect that you are going to resaw it and then sand or plane to thickness. Therefore it should be lost in the process. Nice find thoug...

HELP! Petrol spill on my NGRW

I just bought my first plank of tonewood. 155x29x1250 perfectly QS NGRW. It has been sawn for at least 20 years. If you tap it it rings pure for about 5 or 6 seconds and then, takes another second or 2 for the tops to decay as the bass rolls on. I paid $12.40 for it. It looks good. I spilled petrol ...

A4 laminated templates or laminator/ side bender?

I was just about to glue my copies of my plans to cardboard to make templates when I wondered of it would be better to use my A4 laminator. It would make them stiffer and I could draw on them. Then I wondered if I could use my laminator as a heat source alongside a dowel jig as a side bending setup....

Yes, Martin's good. He can also supply shell custom cut to your pattern. -Jools All this and no minimum order! I think we should talk to him again about being on our preferred vendors list.
