Re: Kootenay Tonewoods

Hi Peter, I used to buy from Graham Hein (Kootenay Tonewoods), however my last order through him was about 3 yrs ago. His product is great, seemed like a pretty good guy, however i did run into some difficulties (hence why i no longer buy from him, won't go into details here). I think he supplies so...

Re: How do you profile your bridge?

I initially rough shape with a scraper and then finish off with a sanding form with 120grit. Takes < 5mins.

Re: Falcate Bridge Plate Thickness

Im sure Trevor will respond here.
But for all the OM sized Falcate acoustics i do at my school = 2mm give or take 10% (either rosewood, rock maple, or tassie myrtle) without CF. Seems to work ok.

Re: Falcate Bracing question

LOL....I've been gluing in the bridge plate/CF sandwich and primary braces as separate operations. I've been running the tow over top of the bridge plate. I obviously missed the relevant instruction in the The Book. Haven't had any issues so far. I do the same and instruct the students to do it thi...

Re: Instrument weight

My only consideration for weight in Classical or Acoustics is that they are balanced and certainly not neck heavy - which going by feedback from players is often a downside/complaint to BOBO construction. However when it comes to flamenco the weight of the instrument in my opinion is the single most...

In my opinion - "3".

But if you are wanting to play around and experiment why dont you try 1, and 2.

Steve, I'm not surprised there's no difference but given the time and expertise that has gone into Trevor's design, I'm guessing there must be a reason for it and I'm missing something.
I wholeheartedly agree, hence why i still put the CF on both sides :)

Re: Brand Fakes

Might need to publish the serial numbers and guitars you have made on your website. At least you will have made a genuine attempt to stop the fakes. I've kept a database of all my instruments, including unique internal marks since day 1. However i dont think publishing serial numbers is a good idea...

Re: How useful is the CF under the brace?

I have 2x falcate braced steel string OMs in my workshop where there is no CF under the falcate braces, but CF on top only. Braces were glued to soundboard with titebond. Everything else on these guitars is the same. After 2 years there is no discernible difference on these instruments compared to o...

Brand Fakes

Has anyone had to deal with the unfortunate issue of fakes of their instruments showing up overseas? And if so what have you done about it? I've had 2x reports of fakes* of mine showing up recently. Im guessing theres not a lot that can be done legally (they have appeared in the middle east). While ...

Thanks all. The grant that's being looked at (through a 3rd party mind you) is around manufacturing and job creation. Very, very early days yet. I dont really want to delve into details here. A few key prerequisites that apologies i wasnt too clear with, some of them have only just come to my attent...

He's building in the traditional spanish style. His methods and techniques aren't too different to mine (and a lot of other traditional makers), only i'd say he's done it a lot more and for longer then I :) . The big exceptions that go outside the mold i notice - are the jointer and slotting the fin...

Re: Overseas payments

I've used Transferwise for years. It's the only system I use as 95% of my sales are overseas. It is worth making up a few PDFs with detailed instructions for clients to print off and follow If it's this hard (they need PDF instructions) for international customers to pay you, i'd suggest any new(er...

I use Stripe payment gateway with my book keeping software (Xero). Integrates perfectly, took 2minutes to setup, didnt even need to activate my "tech brain". Re: Forum section for business

I have left most fb luthier groups as too many participants and under unmoderated threads, means you have to sift through off topic comments. Yep, i find nearly all the luthier Facebook groups are just full of cr@p, bad information, and people selling ebony over and over and over again. If anyone t...

Forum section for business

Is there enough interest in a closed off (from the public and therefor from googlebot) section of the forum for "business" or such?
There's often topics i want to discuss on this forum that are more suited to a closed subforum/room, in particular around the business of luthiery.
Thoughts?

If i had my time again to design a workshop this would be my bare minimum: Machine room | Dirty room (possibly in same space as machine room) | Clean room (for general glue ups, handtool use, and french polishing etc) | Wood store | Finished Guitar store. Also spray booth if you are spraying. Assumi...

Ziricote Spruce Classical #155

Some special timbers used on this one. I had in my rack for a number of years what i considered a very very special top piece, extremely stiff and light with nice bearclaw. I held onto this piece waiting for the right back and sides to match it up with, then along came this stunning set of Ziricote,...

HI Trent,

That's why this forum needs a seperate closed off section for "Business" :toi :toi

Will PM instead.
