Re: Recycled timber small body

Great work. I'm a huge fan of recycling wood to make musical instruments.
Bought a great piece of mahogany recently for $8 from the local hospice shop. They thought it was a headboard. I immediately recognised it was at least 2 tenor ukuleles.

Fractured an arm and an ankle working on an ambulance ........ Sorry, but I did laugh.
Just stay well clear of any hearse that comes in for repairs.

.... and get well soon.

My instinctive reaction was "Holy S#!+. Look at that grain."
Once I finally got over that, I could see the instrument was pretty damned fine as well."
Excellent work

Re: First Step into Realm of Acoustic Build - Uke or Guitar

It's not necessarily easier to make a ukulele than a guitar. Both are difficult. Making a ukulele is a bit quicker because jobs like sanding and polishing take less time, bracing is simpler.... If you've got more information on making a guitar, go with that. It's easier to copy what an expert has wr...

I absolutely love the concept of "re-purposing" wood to make musical instruments and this is a fine example. Looking forward to the sound clips.

Re: Creative uses for sawdust?

Half fill a plastic shopping bag with it and put in the firebox once the embers are glowing nicely. It quickly turns into a solid glowing block of heat.
Anyone north of Tweed Heads can ignore this advice.

Re: What is this?

A nice little research project which could lead on to a nice little restoration project. The rosette appears to be very similar to the rosettes on a couple of antique Neopolitan mandolins I have - built c.1900. The MOP designs are similar and the black ring surrounding the MOP appears extensively cr...

Beautifully proportioned, Christian, very elegant indeed.
The neck joint looks too simple to be true.
How do you lock the neck in place so it can't accidentally be tapped loose (or gradually work its way loose)?

Re: Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival

I just like making sawdust. When I try my hand at building guitar shaped objects I get to make very expensive sawdust and have a helluva lot of fun. The results generally draw positive comments from friends and family but I always know I can make the next one better. I don't aspire to be a Master Lu...

Got my first set of glasses when I was 16. No computers in those days. People blamed the TV. Now as a near geriatric I have to take my glasses off to do any close work and magnifying glasses to do purfling and binding work. It's a funny old life ..... But it beats the alternative

Re: To fix or not to fix?

From what I read here, it seems the top is "bellying". I once fixed my daughter's guitar with a bridge doctor device. Very simple to install and it worked well, though it may not solve the problem for every guitar.
Check out http://www.jldguitar.net/ for more info. Stewmac sell them too.
