Re: Wooden jaws for a metal vice

If you make a wooden curved front jaw with a single magnet in the centre, it is great for holding guitar necks and odd shapes. like this one on Frets.com ..note the cork linings on the jaws.

Re: Soprano Ukulele Jig 1900's style

:( I liked that Ken. Did you manage to get a tight butt join at the tail block? The Nunes ukes had a feathered lap joint held together with staples....The staples were removed after the glue had set and the damage covered over with a strip of veneer. ...The Mossman ukulele had a contrasting s...

Re: Fitting the Lathe made rosettes

Nice little micro adjustment setup you have on the drill press there Ken, do you have the thimble graduated so you can read how deep you are going with the cut? Yes thats right! I made a large knurled graduated nut to fit the screwed rod that normaly is used for depth stops..I also fitted a greased...

Re: Truss rod on a 3/4 upright bass

That's a very clever fix you worked out there Ken. The Chinese factory should just install those as part of the "deluxe" fit out. The factory should simply install a decent fingerboard on the "deluxe" model, IMO. I may be completely wrong but i don't think that ingenious fix will last very long. I ...

Re: Truss rod on a 3/4 upright bass

How have you anchored the other end That took a bit of thought....First thing I did was make a hardwood block with a 6mm hole drilled at an angle ..I glued that to the underside of the fingerboard...I made up a long 4mm drill bit by grinding the end of a spare length of M5 threaded bar ..I then ins...

Truss rod on a 3/4 upright bass

I bought this cheap Chinese bass on ebay I went for the Delux model with a hand carved top..It needed a heck of a lot of setting up to get it playable..I made a new ebony nut to replace the dodgy stained maple one... and got to work on the rubbish fingerboard ... This is ebonized maple also....The t...

Bridge Hight Gauge

I find this useful..But you may prefer other methods  ...Bridge hight depends on a few things, action prefered, Fretboard thickess, neck angle, top radius, Fret size, etc: .. I try and get it as close as I can during construction but it usualy needs some fine adjustment in the end to get it j...

Re: Metalwork Department opened up this month

Looks very nice, what have you put in place to allow for string thickness compensation I get asked this quite a lot..You have to remember that if you space out the strings at the bass end of the nut you have to cramp up the strings at the treble end ..I don't do this co's finger tips press down on ...

Re: Binding channel router on TV Swivel Bracket

Nicely done Ken. I'd be interested in seeing the spring counter balance set up for the router. Nothing groundbreaking Allen...Just two springs, one end attached to the top fixed bit..and the other end to the moving bit...with an adjusting screw (off a turnbuckle) at the top to set the balance ..The...
