Re: Carving necks on the spindle moulder
You could run it off a bottom bearing or the table slot. Looking at this video I think the feller runs it off the sliding table:blackalex1952 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 1:47 pmWould there be a bearing on the bottom of the spindle moulder for the carriage to run against? It looks like it would have to be so...-Ross

Carving necks on the spindle moulder
Just saw this on the web: https://i2.wp.com/brunner-guitars.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/DSC01904.jpeg?fit=1000%2C750 Any ideas on how to work out the shape of the mdf template that goes at either end? It rubs against the frame. It seems to me to be an enlarged version of the shape you want the ne...

Re: Side sanding dish motor & side bender??
Some time back I did see one feller (I think on the OLF) who set up his radius dish on a lazy susan. He then either painted the radius dish edge with rubber paint or stretched a bike inner tube around it. I forget. Anyway, the lazy susan was mounted on a table next to the drill press and in the dril...

Re: thickness sanding Gold Coast
Yep, I'm sorted, ta Steve. Found a couple of places to do it for me. The plan is to extend my shed this week too, so I'll have room for my own machine if I fancy in the future. Had a 15A circuit installed when the electric was put in.

great affordable buffer
A few months back I built my own buffer with a few bits off ebay, a pillar drill motor and a metal shaft turned by a local lad in a shed. But you know how it is - I really don't like changing mops, and fancied an extra buffer so I could go from medium to fine to extra fine. Less sanding, more polish...

Ta. What does that look like? Is there a serial number for the form? There was nothing like that when I booked it in with Interparcel.

thickness sanding Gold Coast
Lads, I normally thickness my tops and backs at the Mens Shed, but due to the current situation, the sheds are all closed.
Anyone in the Gold Coast got a thickness sander I can come and hire for an hour?

Looks like I may well be getting some from China. But I'll be buying quite a bit. 450mm wide. 60 grit. Any use to anyone?

Thanks fellers. From what I can see, neither of those firms have what I'm after. Nothing bigger than A4.

Big sheets of sandpaper
I'm after big sheets of abrasive, minimum 420mm wide. In Europe, I used to buy the sanding belts for wide belt sanders and cut them up. I'm a bit stumped here. Any suggestions?

Re: 'Milling' with a drill press
You can "mill" on a drill press with a Saftey planer. Stewmac sell a version of it. Though it has to be said, the results from this are not great, neither is is all that safe. I've used one for thicknessing heads but I have to say its a faff to set up and the results were not as clean as I'd hoped. ...

glues for plastic binding in Oz
Happy new year to you.
I've got some plastic binding to do - what's available here that's decent? Is this stuff any good?

Re: Fibre Sheet for side lamination
LMI sell it - its called Fish paper in the US, and gasket paper in the UK. The gasket paper I bought in Oz has a more rubbery feel and is a bit different. If you're trying to laminate the top and back purfling into the sides you're best off buying from the UK or USA. If you just want to laminate sid...

Re: shed insulation
Thanks lads. Getting roofers in to lift the sheets and put foil/wool down. And stick a pair of whirlybirds on at the same time.
I’d like to do the walls with batts and ply. How would you go about getting that 25mm gap between the batts and the colourbond?

shed insulation
Well lads, Mrs F and I have bought a nice little house with a nice big shed. Its an old colourbond shed in decent nick. I'd like to insulate the roof and walls prior to panelling them with ply - any advice? I'd much rather not take the roof off to do so, and I've also heard that condensation can be ...

Re: Selmac Grand Bouche
My Grandfather had a Selmer. You can read about it here:
https://www.nkforsterguitars.com/blog/i ... er-guitar/
The top varied slightly in thickness, but most of it was around 1.4mm thick.
It is a spectacular sounding guitar.

Re: Bote-cote epoxy
I've been using Bote Cote since I arrived here. I get the crystal + non yellowing version. Whilst the smell isn't terrible, I would advise a mask and gloves. As one feller told me - when working with epoxy, there are two types of people. The ones who are allergic, and the ones who aren't...yet.
