Oh and many people have had bad reactions to epoxy so wear some nitrile gloves. D

Re: Epoxy, brushes, CF tow, oh my!

Joel I have been happy with West system epoxy. I don't try to do too much bracing in one go so haven't run into the glue setting on me. For applying I use cheap artists paint brushes. They need to be reasonably stiff and I often need to cut down the amount of bristle. You can get them cheap enough t...

Re: Bear claw spruce & red gum mando

Very nice looking Trent.

I got started on a build from Graham's book but the gardening season opened and it is somewhat paused! Must get back to it.

What type of neck body joint did you use?

Re: Crack repair posssible?

Not helping the original question but Mark, when I tried build with Padouk I found it would crack if you just looked at it sideways! Bending the sides was hopeless I just ended with cracks half way along the length. I gave up as I didn't want to send a box out into the world that was so liable to cr...

That looks amazing. The skill in getting those ribs shaped is very impressive.

I am interested in the fixture a t the bottom. Are strings anchored into it? I have only ever seen a metal attachment point.

Good luck with the building Phil.

If you are anything like the rest of us here you will find it quite addictive. You think well I'll just try one or two to see how it is done and after not too long you are pasting a label in that says number 10!

Frank I would repeat how impressed I am by the craftsmanship.

On further looking I notice you have used brass bridge pins for the top and bottom strings. Was that to change a resonant frequency?

Re: Cello build

Look forward to it Rod.

I've always thought that the carving of either archtop guitars or the violin family requires so much more craftsmanship than a straight guitar build. I'm not going there. Enough trying to get a 'straight' build right. But will enjoy seeing how you get on.

Well can't say I go for the colours much either, but it looks to be very well constructed. Detailing is absolutely great.

I guess the purrple heart will tone down in time!

Re: Violin vice.

It’s funny that was what I thought. (As in clamping to the bench) I guess we always try to imagine how we would use such a jig in practical terms. I imagine getting instrument supples is pretty difficult where you are....? I have great admiration for anyone who can do the carving of things like viol...

Re: Bending Irons

Bending non cutaway sides is fairly straightforward on an iron. Doing a cutaway is something else entirely. I know lots of people tell you it's doable, go slow etc but I have found it just really difficult. As a low skilled bender I decided to go with using a heating blanket and a fairly elaborate b...

Is it just me or do you seem to end up retopping rather a lot?

Is it that you are now so good at it that it's not a bother, or do you just like the hurt!!!

Thanks Nigel that is a nice detailed view of the process.

I really need to get away from simply manoeuvering rulers and straight edges round the box!

I too had heard of this but never tried it. Sounds like it could be really useful for pinning down odd rattles.

Indian Rosewood? BOBO? Falcate?

Who did you buy your pegs from? I love the idea but they are so expensive.

Absolutely gorgeous Steve.

One can't judge too much through a recording, but what does come across is the evenness of tone both across the strings and along the fretboard.

Hope you charged enough for it!

Re: Sharpening very narrow chisel

Thanks both. I like the trick Nigel. I managed to get it into my Veritas honing guide - I tend to forget it as I rarely use it - so clunky. With some more work I found it was not my poor technique but the back is in an awful state. Radiused across the width and a pronounced curve lengthways. We've p...

Sharpening very narrow chisel

I have acquired a 2 mm chisel second hand, which should be useful for small mitres. I am normally a honing guide user but this obviously won't go in a guide. I can manage the bevel by hand. However the back is puzzling me. How to flatten it without rounding it over? It is pretty hard to keep it flat...
