HOG TOP

Post by jeffhigh » Mon Aug 10, 2009 12:45 pm

Just strung this one up yesterday.

Figured mahogany back sides and top
New guinea rosewood neck V jointed headstock
Koa Headplate from David Hurd
Ebony fretboard and bridge.

It's my take on a slope shouldered 14 fret 000 with a 24.9" scale and a Stauffer style adjustable neck

Those pictures are just a tease Jeff. Come on man, close ups. Lets see this adjustable neck, and that top is just lovely from a distance. lets get close and personal. I want to pick that one up and give it a strum.

G'day Jeff,

Lovely looking guitar there mate! I'm with the lads and reckon that's very nice mahogany. I do like the dark tone you usually get from an all hog guitar.

Thanks for posting.

Cheers

The mahogany was sold to me as "Beeswing striped honduras mahogany"
Here a few more pictures. Not much to see on the neck joint, the neck is morticed into the body about 6mm with a single bolt/ strap button holding it on and allowing tool free adjustment (the strap button will turn by hand if you pull the neck back to take the tension off)
The fingerboard extension is supported on a 3mm by 25mm steel bar, surrounded by ebony strips set back under the edge as a shadowline.
I am really pleased with the sound, it was brilliant right from the start.
A little quieter than my 10 month old Lutz spruce topped OM but it is short scale.

What are the bindings Jeff. They look really nice with the mahogany.

Just tortoise plastic from ALS. I was going for a style 16 look.
Much as it is heresy to lovers of wood binding, I relly like working with this tortoise.

Thanks for the comments guys.
I am strumming it softly here this morning trying not to wake the household, loving the sound.
Nick, the way I do an adjustable neck is a lot simpler and easier for me than doing a fixed dovtail. And I can always dial in the perfect string height.

Very, very nice Jeff. She really is quite the looker and these hog topped guitars seem to have a reputation for opening up slow over a very looong period of time. I have often heard people suggest the best they ever heard was an 'old' full mahogany guitar, so I guess you now have one that will keep bringing a smile to your face for many years to come.

Cheers
