When people complete my kits or do an extreme build I point them towards a TruOil finish. forn an enthusiastic amateur it is one of the easiest to do and if refreshed every six months is a great way for budding builders to 'fiddle' with their work and get to know it better...

Magnum Sports in NSW is one supplier, found it via Google. Tru-Oil is used to seal wooden gun stocks so relatively easy to source.

My boys in Finland got it from the 'gun shop'...

I've tried most of them and it is the best.

It amuses me - 'my local gun sports shop'... we don't have them here in Blighty, notlocal ones anyway! - they don't trust us.

We have them because we're barbaric, in fact I hear we just hung our entire parliament, which is always a good thing..car salesmen and lawyers next.

I like truoil, most gun shops sell it. I apply it from the start as Pete shows in his vid. Sand the wood with micromesh and burnish each 'thin' coat and it will build over a few days into quite a high gloss and your arms will be big and strong so you can handle an even bigger gun and eat really chunky soup without a problem...its all relative you know.

You need to get yourself a double barrelled one - saves you having to reload before the second coat...

You left out Accountants!! ... but then if we hanged all the accountants & lawyers we'd have no-one left who'd be megalomaniac enough to run for parliament & form a government.

I have used Tru Oil just once on a guitar. Very easy to work with and lovely finish. The main issue I had was the guitar picked up some very, very light scratches in its early life. When I lightly sanded them out and just reapplied a few coats to that area, I got what I think are referred to as 'witness lines'. In pursuing this, I was told by a "finisher" that this is part of its limitation and that the only way to get it right again was to scrape the whole surface back and reapply from scratch, if you'll excuse the pun.

Should I have gone about this in a different way?

May be Frank..As mentioned above I think that many very 'thin' coats is the best bet and during application burnish them. In other words firmly rub just a dab of oil on one surface only. Grab a clean bit of Tshirt and start rubbing to take off all the excess. The oil will begin to dry getting sticky and causing heat via friction. The heat will cause the oil to dry more rapidly but keep rubbing firmly in a circular motion until the friction is all but gone. Leave it go a few hours and do it all again when ever you feel the need to punish yourself for not buying a compressor.

Holy cow, look at that thing!
