Archtop Plans?

Post by needsmorecowbel » Tue Dec 21, 2010 11:45 pm

So i had a brainwave today and thought that it would be a good idea to get an Archtop mold made professionally as i don't have ready access to Bandsaws. APT Laser Cutting in West Heidelberg said they would do the cutting (minus material costs) for $60-100 then all i would have to do is glue three or four sections of laser cut wood together to make the mold. Does anyone know of a good place to get some Archtop plans that are in CAD file formats? Alternatively where good paper plans can be attained?

Hey Stu, Stewmac's have the Benedetto plans (as do LMI) which are a fairly safe bet & seem to be the standard pattern for a 17" Archtop these days. Whenever I've seen people make them they always refer to them as a "Benedetto copy". I have some plans of a D'Angelico 18" which I think I got from LMI years ago, not sure they still supply them but also don't forget, google is your friend  .

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

You can use Gthang (body outline design tool) to output dxf files
http://liutaiomottola.com/formulae/gthang.htm
It has a preset for an archtop

If you are talking to someone in West Heidelberg, then you sound like you are on my side of town. I live in east doncaster. You are welcome to cut your mould on my saw, but you will have to do it before the end of next week, as I am moving interstate the week after. I also have the Benedetto plans if you want to have a look. I also have an mdf template that I used for my mould if that gives you a head start.
PM me if interested, and I'll give you contact details. Frank.
