fruity wood

Post by JJ model » Thu Oct 11, 2012 11:14 am

Hi Folk, my dream came thru! and now I've found what I wanted :cl
I've recently made some mango guitars and quickly sold and now I'm gonna try to make some more with some local fruit trees. These trees are very old maybe twice my age and they need to be removed for other developement.
Now I've got Durian, Rambutan, Mango and some other ( Bonus! ) enjoy!

Wow! Amazing trees!

I didn't know that mango trees grow so huge, and I didn't even know the other fruit tree names you are mentioning.
Thank you Jeffrey, for sharing this!

Like the pic of the guy in flip flops working the chainsaw......

Pity the trees are losing out to developers but at least the wood is going to be turned into stringed works of art instead of just being burned.

Nice timber.

Got a few Mango trees in my folks yard around 1m in diameter. Maybe I should sneak in with the chainsaw one day!

Thats some beautiful timber Jeffery, and will make for some spectacular instruments i'm sure. Well done on getting to the tree's before they were chopped into firewood.( tends to be the case here in NZ)

That Mango sure is something special Jeffery (even got some flaming to go with the spectacular patterning), can't imagine it in safer hands. Will love seeing what you produce with it  .

Jeffrey love the look of the Rambutan it looks a little like Koa is it related? Does it grow anywhere else?

Also as I never heard of it is it easy to work (bend etc) and is it common to have curl in the timber?

Also never heard of Durian whats its like to work?

Should make some lovely guitars :)

All the best
Dave

That is really beautiful wood Jeffrey, we are very envious. I have one question, not too serious. Does the Durian wood smell like the fruit? :D

Beautiful stuff. So erm, if you have too much and need to lighten your load... free up some space...

Happy to provide a good free home.

Nice score Jeff.

All those trees grow up here in the Cairns region. Very similar climate to Malaysia. There are even some Mango trees around town that would be over 2 metres in radius. Diameter? My arms aren't anywhere near that long.

They're going to make great looking instruments.

Hi Jeffrey, you are such an inspiration to me as a newbie.
Thankyou for your creativity, craft and showing us that you can get great tones from a variety of wood if you have the skills.

Hello there,

Following on from the mango thread, a friend of mine in Brisbane is cutting an old tree down in his backyard. It's got a decent size but I'm not sure I can get anything out of it. If I post some pictures, would you be able to give me your thoughts on what could be done with it? If it is of suitable size, you may know some places in Brisbane where I could get it 1/4 sawn?

Thanks,
Kim
