Starting Front Head Stock Carving
Well here's the first concept design drawing. The slots will also have the modified thumbnail pattern like the back.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving

Geez Chris, they are such works of beauty that I would be wanting to put my signature in the bottom right hand corner every time.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving
Played around with it a little. Probably let it sit for the week and make a finale tracing and working drawing and start work on it this weekend.
But nothing finale until the gouge hits the wood...

I love it, but I would love it more if you incorporated your brand into it somehow.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving
Very tidy work!
May I ask which tools you have used so far for the front carving?
Did you redraw the design with a scribe to the ebony or did you somehow transfer it from the paper drawing?
Good to know it took you more than 20 minutes Chris!chris paulick wrote:I'm calling it 12hrs. carving time to this stage.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving
Pretty much 3 gouges an 11/3mm, 11/2mmand an11/.5mm and some knives and checkering tools. And another 4/3mm gouge.
I just laid out the lines with a marking gage I made and another gouge for the point between the slots, not sure which one it was but one close to the radius. I used a blade from my fly cutter for the marking gage/ compass.

Thank you Chris!
This information sheds quite a bit light on your carving procedure.
I can't promise though that I would not ask you some further question when you'll (hopefully) present the next working stages.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving
Well i got some design and layout work done today. Use a white transfer paper from the fabric store to transfer the design this time. It will need to be cleaned up while carving but it's in the ball park.

Re: Starting Front Head Stock Carving
Did some more ruffing in. I canned the white line transfer paper( lines not sharp enough and I kept smugging the off. Went back to gluing on the paper drawing and scoring in the lines with a knife and chisels.

Update. This takes me time and I usually don't get much done until the weekends. Sometimes a little durning the week if I'm not too burnt out after work.

OK, call it ruffed in. Time now to refine it, a little under cut here and there and some shaping and accent lines. I think it's coming along alright .

Only alright Chris?? I'd say bloody brilliantly! That looks great, I'd be extremely proud of myself if I'd done half that good.

Ruffed in? Bloody hell, it is pretty damn excellent, I would be proud if I did anything 1/10 as nice.
