Heart rimu/sitka cutaway

Post by Shane Woonton » Fri Oct 25, 2013 7:59 pm

Hi guys,

Handed this off to its new owner yesterday.
Heart rimu B&S (from Cristian)
puriri fretboard and bridge
sitka top
Fijian plantation-grown swetenia neck
Rewarewa rosette and end detail
Schertler tuning machines

Unfortunately I had limited time late last night to get pics, so they're awful...

The rimu was beautiful to work with, easiest wood I've ever found for bending. Very happy with the sound.

The photos dont do the fret markers justice but they look great in the flesh. Very understated. I used 6mm brass tube. I also used 2.5mm solid brass rod for the side dots and evo fretwire. The finished look on the puriri was really nice. Puriri is a very pretty timber, works beautifully and has a pleasant smell too.

I'll add some construction pics soon for your viewing pleasure

A beatitiful Guitar and some very nice pictures!

But I didn't catch what was/is going on with the upper frets and those recesses:

WOW what a beauty Shane!!! hats off to you my friend. Great subtle details and nice workmanship. I bet the new owner is stoked!!
I'm Glad you enjoyed using the Puriri and the Rimu and Rewarewa they are amazing tone woods, we have so many here in NZ.
I noticed you are using Bond it on! my glue of choice as well.

Hi Markus,

If you are referring to the marks beside the fret slots in this image, they are just marks from the saw depth guide.

That is a really pretty guitar Shane, I'm jealous. What is that pick guard made from, it looks just like Silkyoak but blonde?

Cheers

Thanks Col. That's the Rewarewa, an NZ native. From what I read about it it can have a tendancy to split but I cut that pickguard from a block by hand and planed it to less than 1.5mm thick with no probs. It certainly has a beautiful grain.
