335 build with style.

Post by KirbyMD » Fri Apr 26, 2019 5:41 pm

Been working on this beast lately, resembles a 335 in shape only.
Jarrah and Tassie oak body, Tassie oak neck.
Just started shaping the top and back arches.
Jarrah binding.
IMG_20190425_115057_012.jpg
Keeping it simple with 1 volume, 1 tone and a 3 way toggle.
Output jack exits side of body so the top isn't cluttered.
Slimline and chambered.

Hi Mark,
That's all my handiwork.
Each houndstooth section is made up of 4 pieces 6mmx30mm, hand cut in a little mitre box. Hours of fun.

I assembled each row as I went just in case there was any variance in my cuts.
I've made the control knobs for it in the same material plus pickup holders.

Yes. Impressive work, and very individual. I am looking forward to seeing the end result (and more steps in between if you want to share).

Thank you McCreed and Mark,
I'm currently shaping the back so pics aren't far away,
Just a day or two of other nonrelated things that need to get done first.
It's cleaning up really nicely though.

Thanks Trent and thanks Wayne,
So far it's working out as planned, thank goodness.
Already thinking about building another one but with a different top.
Body thickness on this is 28mm outer edge and 40mm at bridge.
The top has a workable thickness of 5mm so its a very subtle arch.

All thats left to do now is the headstock inlay then I can test fit the hardware and get this one sealed.
Probably one of the most enjoyable builds I've ever done, in fact I think I'll build another.....

Noice! I like the way you finished off the lower bout with the parquetry.
The overall design has a South-West US feel to it. (to me anyway)

How about a closer shot of the fretboard? I think I see some parquetry on your fret markers, is that right?

Cheers,
Mick

Thanks Mick, the southwest US look was unintended but I noticed it too. There's a little bit of fine detail in that area that doesn't show up until the sealer coat, I hope it shows up. The fret markers are a signature of my builds, these are made from jarrah and silver wattle.

Hah! Those pill fret markers are a nice touch. They look like one of the meds I take daily!
I'm sure whatever you use for a top coat will really bring out the finer detail.

What *are* you thinking for the clear? Tru Oil? Poly? Lacquer?

Thank you Fisherman, glad you like it.

Mick, I'm seriously leaning toward a poly satin finish as I like the look and feel of it.

2 sealer coats finally on and what a difference it makes. Decided to keep to my original plan and go with a satin finish I have to admit it's even better than I imagined and once that gold hardware goes on....

Headstock inlay complete and all timber components are built and sealed. YAY! Guess that means it's mockup time.....mock,mock,mock. I see the cameras playing funny buggers again, upside down.

Almost there, all wiring and hardware now installed.
The satin coat really shows off the timber combo and gold hardware completes the overall look.
One of my favorite things in this build is the timber details, the jarrah binding, the control knobs, pickup supports and jarrah inlays for the brand name between pickups and the headstock logo.
