Rosette Log

Post by Semmens Guitars » Tue May 12, 2020 7:23 pm

Hi,

Has anyone attempted making a rosette log to make multiple rosettes?

I am in the process of replicating Michael Thames ' process of creating a rosette log to hopefully make 20 rosettes.

It will feature a centre mosaic pattern as well as multiple rings and instead of a rope binding I've decided to use about 50 aussie veneers stacked and glued.

The centre motif has used up 19 metres of veneer!!!

Hope it works!!!

I'll post some pics when I'm on my computer next.

I made my own rosette for my classical build. I stopped when i had got the component parts and then cut thin slices and built the rosette on the soundboard. There are pictures in my thread.

The first test cut. I ended up setting up a jig on the Table saw and used the Fret Saw Blade to cut the thinnest Kerf I could Get. I got it set up to be able to cut it cleanly by squaring the block and flipping it.

Hi Richard

Yes I looked through your thread at your rosette before I started....it looks fantastic well done!!!! I am having a go at doing it en masse to make about 20 of them in one go.

Im using these videos as a guide.

I recall considering making the whole thing and then cutting "slices" off for each rosette. However I'm not planning to make many more guitars and so the time investment didn't seem worth it to me. It took me a long enough time to make my "stick' of mosiac. Plus it was nice to be able to use it to make the end grafts. I've never seen that done before and i think its a really nice touch.
And lastly I like the idea that each one is a bit unique so the next guitar will have a different pattern.

I enjoyed the process though. Very satisfying when you're done.

Good luck with yours.

Hi There,

I have been working on this rosette log during the covid lock-down when my guitar making classes stopped for a little while. I have finally cut up the rosettes and although they are far from perfect I am still really happy with the outcome.

In the Pics above I used walnut and silky oak as the main timbers for the centre mosaic tile but I decided after making one stack that the contrast was not striking enough for me. I then got to work making my own veneers on the drum sander because I had already blown my budget on the previous veneers! I used Mahogany and a very pale silky oak which looked better.

The only thing I didn’t get quite right was the angle of the tile columns when I glued them to the log . I did plane each one of them but not quite enough and this produced a few gaps. After installing them into a soundboard I simply scalped out the section that had small gaps and installed a piece to fit.

Some said I was mad and that the process looked tedious, but I rather enjoyed the journey and have ordered more veneer for the next one now that I have nutted out how to do it and get it right. It will be a much smaller log making the job a bit easier.

I hope you enjoy the pics.
thanks

Nicely done.
Plenty of imperfection in my rosette but that to me is fine. Looks properly handmade.
Im about to start my next one.
