A not so recent build

Post by Taffy Evans » Wed Feb 04, 2009 10:35 pm

It might be a while till I post my most recent built guitars as
guitar building has come to a standstill as far as gluing goes, and thats where I'm at this time. So I thought you may be interested in this solid body electric violin I built some time ago.
The body and neck are Osage Orange [Maclura pomifera] I believe it's also called Indian Bow Wood.
The fingerboard is ebony. It has a bolt on neck and MOP inlay. The finish is nitro.

I like that Taffy. How does an electric violin create sound? And does it sound like a conventional violin?

Good question Allen, same from me Taffy, what type of pickup did you install. You may have just added to my future projects list.

Thanks for comments................Pickup piezo Martin undersaddle inlaid under the feet of the bridge. Sounds not close to acoustic but can be pleasant depending on the EQ effects used. Plays well I'm told.

So the piezio just has contact from the outer portions of the bridge, or is the bridge on this one not quite the same as one on a conventional violin?

Neat, nice lines. Looks heavy though?

I've been thinking of a flat-top plywood $50 double bass with simple guitar-style bracing inside.

OK I thought of it, now back to serious business.

Hi Allen, I layed the pickup in a routed slot with an ebony shim on top the regular fiddle bridge stands on top, feet are reshaped of course, photo may help.

Matthew, yep it's heavy, it was not intended as a serious player I just wanted a project to use the timber on, that was about 1992 I think. it's hung on the wall ever since, brave violinists often ask to have a go when they come to the office/showroom.

Thanks for the picture Taffy. It all makes sense now. I'm guessing Matthew doesn't want to haul around a solid body Bass though.

Now there's an instrument that I'd like to be holding when a bar fight breaks out. 8)

If you made it from coccobolo you could give everyone in the bar rashes as well as bruises and black eyes.

I would be happy to lend you a bit of wood next time you run short like that Taffy.
